1 Meeting the challenge: Electrification and Climate Change
Symposium on Energy in the 21st Century April 12, 2019, East Syracuse, NY John Bruckner – National Grid N.Y. President

2 National Grid’s U.S. business
National Grid is one of the world’s largest investor owned utilities, with more than 7 million gas and electricity US customers and 22,000 employees in the U.S. and U.K. National Grid U.S. by the numbers 3.4 million electric customers Electricity transmission network of 8,800 miles of overhead line; 100 miles of underground cable, 380 transmission substations 3.6 million gas customers Gas network of 35,000 miles of gas distribution pipeline; 490 miles of gas transmission pipeline 13,000 employees, ~ 8,000 in NY

3 National Grid Northeast 80X50 Pathway
Provide customers with affordable, reliable, resilient and sustainable energy in the future Large Scale Renewables and Expanded Transmission Enable Distribution Energy Resources Gas Network Decarbonization Make smart and cost-efficient new energy solution investments Be strategic in traditional asset replacement / investment Meet gas safety and compliance standards Employ efficient new gas technologies Focus on storm hardening, resiliency

4 Clean energy transition underway at National Grid
Solar We’ve received more requests in the past two years to connect solar to our system than new gas services Recently invested $100M in Sunrun, the largest dedicated residential solar company in U.S. Acquired Geronimo Energy, major renewable developer National Grid 23MW solar farm in Calverton, Long Island selected for operation in 2022 Wind We connected Deepwater Wind’s Block Island wind farm to grid - first offshore wind installation in the U.S. Electric Vehicles (EV) & Battery Storage We own and have installed 165 EV charging stations, NY stations development program 2 MW Battery storage projects in upstate NY - Pulaski Two 5MW battery storage projects approved on LI; East Hampton in operation; Montauk in operation by end of year Biogas Our Newtown Creek Renewable Gas Project is expected to inject enough renewable natural gas from organic waste to heat 5,200 residential homes

5 REV Demonstration Projects
Clifton Park Demand Reduction Potsdam Community Resilience Distributed System Platform Fruit Belt Neighborhood Solar Distributed Generation Interconnection Schenectady Smart City Long Island Geothermal

6 The Traditional Grid –One Way Power Flow

7 The Modern Grid – Two Way Power Flow
Technical Challenges Balancing Load System Stability Capacity Voltage Protection Schemes Control Schemes

8 Move from DER interconnection to DER integration
The Vision Move from DER interconnection to DER integration For the Household Lower Bills, Improve Power Quality For Site Developer Reduce Interconnection Time and Cost Standardize Settings For the PV Industry Higher PV Penetration, Future Growth of Solar For National Grid Manage Peak Reduction Increase Supply Diversity Greater Access and Utilization of Clean Energy For All Stakeholders

9 Applications Interconnected

10 Advanced (Smart) Metering Infrastructure
Started in built on a Collaborative Process that included participation of customers, environmental groups, state agencies, labor, energy policy institutes, low-income advocates and other stakeholders Filed in November 2018, currently before PSC 6 year rollout from approval First two years – Design and full customer awareness plan Years 2-6 – Meter Installation (1.7 million electric meters/640k gas modules) Customer Protections 1 year “hold harmless” for all customers/3 years for low-income

11 Natural Gas – Need to serve remains
Albany Loop Northeast Supply Enhancement Capital Region reinforcement Offshore pipeline links NJ to Rockaways Diversify Supply Increase supply to region Reduce constraints Robust Demand in NYC/LI displaces Oil Forestall moratorium Notified projects of pending growth limits Renewable Natural Gas: leading a collaborative effort to develop quality standards and stream line connections process; examining biomass and hydrogen blending; partnering with NYC on injecting water/food waste gas into system
