Key points: Art & Design Units  standards remain the same  feature the best approaches of the current Art & Design Units  have a hierarchical Unit structure that provide progression from National 3 to Higher  The Units offer opportunities for skills, knowledge and understanding to be developed and integrated throughout the Course  Added Value is assessed through a practical activity at National 4 and a portfolio and a question paper at National 5 and Higher.

Unit Specifications UnitExpressive Activity (National 5) Outcome 1Analyse the factors influencing artists and art practice by: 1.1 Describing how artists use a range of art materials, techniques and/or technology in their work. Assessment 1.2 Describing the impact of artists’ Standardscreative choices in a range of artists’ work. 1.3 Analysing the impact of social and cultural influences on selected artists and their practice.

Unit Specifications UnitExpressive Activity (National 5) Outcome 2Produce creative development ideas for expressive artwork by: 2.1 Selecting suitable subject matter for an expressive activity 2.2 Producing analytical drawings, studies and investigative research to represent specific Assessmentfeatures of the subjects Standards2.3 Using a selection of art materials, techniques and/or technology expressively 2.4 Developing selected visual elements and refining compositional ideas creatively in 2D and/or 3D 2.5 Using problem solving and evaluation skills when developing ideas for expressive artwork

Unit Specifications Evidence Requirements for this Unit:  Assessors should use their professional judgement, subject knowledge and experience, and understanding of their learners, to determine the most appropriate ways to generate evidence and the conditions and contexts in which they are used.  Evidence will be a combination of practical, written oral and/or recorded evidence.  Evidence may also be presented for individual Outcomes or it may be gathered for the Unit as a whole (holistic assessment).

Unit Specifications For this Unit learners will be required to provide evidence of:  analysing the things that have influenced and inspired artists and their work  using descriptive art vocabulary when describing their own work and the work of other artists  producing expressive drawings, studies and investigative research showing understanding of the subject matter  using a variety of art materials, techniques and/or technology creatively for expressive effect in their work  creative development of compositional ideas and art work in response to stimuli

UASPs – key features  Valid from August 2013  Designed to encourage professional judgement  Provide broad-based tasks – allow assessors to choose appropriate context and forms of evidence  Show range of approaches to generating assessment evidence  Give information on the type of evidence which could be gathered and how this is to be judged against Assessment Standards

Art & Design UASPs There are three packages of Unit Assessment Support for each Course. For Art & Design these are:  Unit-by-Unit approach: Design and  Unit-by-Unit approach: Expressive - the Unit Assessment Support is for each Unit in a Course. Normally it will cover all of the Outcomes and Assessment Standards.  Portfolio approach – this supports a portfolio approach to assessment by providing information on judging evidence for assessment normally covering all Outcomes and Assessment Standards for all the Units in a Course.

Assessment Package 1 Key issues for the subject -integration of art and design knowledge and practical art and design skills -creative experimentation and development of ideas -explicit focus on reflection (creative process) -making assessment judgements - standards are comparable to existing qualifications -reasonable assistance/support – given stimuli (N3/N4)/supported reflection

National 4 Added Value Unit  Makes the Course more than the sum of its parts  Builds on current Course assessment and Group Award approaches  Defined as breadth, challenge and/or application as outlined in Building the Curriculum 5  May involve accumulation, assimilation, integration and/or application of skills, knowledge and understanding  Controlled assessment –setting conducting and marking

N4 AV Unit: Practical Activity  A practical activity in which the learner will produce a piece of expressive art and a design idea –set by centres within SQA guidelines –conducted under some supervision and control –evidence will be internally marked by centre staff in line with SQA guidelines. –all assessment subject to quality assurance by SQA.

N5 Internal Assessment of Course Components  Controlled assessment is SQA’s approach to developing assessments (setting), the conditions of assessment (conducting), and marking assessments (marking).  SQA is introducing controlled assessment for non-question paper components of the Added Value Unit and new National Courses at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher.

N5 External Course Assessment Controlled assessment of Question Paper and Portfolio The portfolio is:  set by centres within SQA guidelines  conducted under some supervision and control  evidence will be submitted to SQA for external marking.  all marking will be conducted by SQA.
