 Involved in 3 different wars.  Since the 700’s Japan has continued to borrow words from other languages.  Much of Japan’s culture has changed due to Western influences.

 Comprised of many different islands  Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Philippine Sea, East China Sea, and the Sea of Japan.  South Korea is to the North.  Japan has 47 different prefectures.

 Bowing is important.  Name suffixes.  Very low crime rate.  Over 126 million citizens.  Experiences many natural disasters each year.  Has an Emperor and a Prime Minister  In Japan, the first name follows the last name.  Most last names are related to nature.

 Japan has no national flower.  Five of the most common plants are Sakura, Ume, Momiji, Matsu, and Take.  Shinto and Buddhism are Japan’s two major religions.  There are over 100 cherry tree varieties in Japan.  In Spring, hanami parties occur under blossoming trees.

 Located in Kamakura, Karagawa prefecture.  13.5 meters tall and weights about 93.1 tons.  Seated in Lotus position.  Temple is open from 7 AM to 6 PM  Opening fee is 200yen, or 150 yen for children.

 Located in Himeji, Hyogo prefecture.  Contains 83 buildings.  Severely damaged a few times.  Took 9 years to be brought back to it’s original form.

 Located in Kyoto, Kyoto prefecture.  One of the museums that had been imperial mandated.  Focuses on collections of pre-modern Japanese artwork.  Opened in 1897, official name settled in 1952.

 Expands over four prefectures, Tochigi, Gunma, Fukushima, and Niigata.  Contains shrines and temples.  Waterfalls, mausoleums, temples, shrines, the old Imperial house, mountains, a lake, a marshland, and a botanical garden.

 Located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Tokyo Prefecture.  Is a park-like residence.  Covers an area of 7.41 square kilometers.  Some parks open to the public.
