Introduction China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO) is a non-profit making, membership organization operating nationwide. CANGO was founded in 1992 and registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs in (Registration Number 3340)

Our Mission CANGO’s mission is to create a strong, empowered network of Chinese NGOs to address poverty alleviation, environmental protection and social development, particularly in China’s poor, remote and minority-inhabited areas.

Our Vision CANGO’s vision is to empower citizens and civil society to create an environment that offers fair chances to everybody for sustainable development.

International Cooperation CANGO has developed and maintains good relations with more than 157 foreign NGOs, bilateral and multilateral organizations through its day-to-day operations.

CANGO’s Performance By the end of December 2006, CANGO raised CNY 335 million ($44 million) from 77 donor agencies for project implementation. The local matching fund has reached CNY 230 million ($30million). 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities were involved in the projects.

Membership in China By the end of April 2006, CANGO has 140 member organizations in 28 provinces through mainland China.

Prospect CANGO will actively broaden our alliance with businesses and our cooperation with international organizations, domestic and international NGOs, as well as the government. We will exert great efforts to achieve these goals.

CANGO’s Role CANGO acts as an intermediary agency and partners with international and Chinese NGOs to enhance fund raising, provision of technical support, Capacity building of grassroots NGOs in China, Platform for multi-stakeholders.

Project Fields Rural and Community Development, Environmental Protection, Health Care, Gender and Development, Civil Society Building.

Challenges in China Huge population—1.3 billion, Sustainable development, 200 million get rid of poverty, still 30 million in poverty, Environment Pressure, Over 200 million migrants, and Civil society development.

Project Introduction 1 Project Title:Supporting Income Generation Activities through Linzhi Mushroom Production for the Poor Farmers in Shahe Township, Jinzhai County, Anhui Province, China Project Period: 1 Jan to 30 June 2004 Beneficiaries: 3,000 poor farmers in 600 households from 10 villages

Stakeholders to the project Project Holder:CANGO, Donor: Caritas Australia, Implementing Agencies/owner:Shahe Township Mushroom Producers Association (SMPA), Partner:Jinzhai County NGO Association

Project Background/justification 14,500 people in 3,340 households, low education and poor consciousness to do business, average net income in year 2000 was only CNY640, The forestry resource is not used efficiently, Local farmers have high enthusiasm with this project, Lingzhi Mushroom is a kind of famous traditional herb in China, The technique of planting is simple enough to grasp, Developing strategy to promote mushroom production,etc

Project outputs total planted bags is RMB 3 million, the average income of each household is CNY5,200.00, and the average income for each participant is 1040yuan, learnt mushroom planting skills, nearly 100 trained women were invited to the neighbor province as technicians,etc
