PLAYING THE GAME: E- SPORTS STRUGGLE TO FIND ITSELF By Joshua Almond

5  Topic: E-sports  Focus: Implications of the shift to the virtual world and leisure becoming sport.  Method: Political Economy and Textual Analysis  Target of Analysis: e-sports (StarCraft 2 Fans)  Goals: To better understand the world of E-sports and the implications of this new medium

QUOTES  “The power of computer games is seen first and foremost as located in the way they ask us to interact with them, to be engaged” (Taylor 2012, 190).  “It is also important to recognize the social nature of gaming, which has been facilitated by greater technological sophistication (e.g., multiplayer and online gaming)” (Bryce and Rutter 2003, 12).

WHAT I LEARNED…  The world of e-sports is big, and ever changing.  It is at the cross section of many different forms of media.  It takes place in the virtual world.  It has become more and more popular as society moves toward being comfortable in a virtual space.
