Cast Narrator:Allee Farmer Fred:Mattias Enemy Ed:Eric Wheat 1:Alleah Wheat 2:Lauren Weed 1:Austin Weed 2:Matt Servant 1:Toby Servant 2:Kelly

Set-up:This is a retelling of the parable of the farmer sowing seed, as retold in the style of Dr. Seuss.

Narrator:Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.

Farmer Fred: I am Fred. Fred I Am. Good seed I’ll plant and grow my wheat. A healthy harvest, I will reap. I’ll sow my good seed here and there, I’ll sow my good seed everywhere.

Farmer Fred: (Farmer Fred sows good seed in his field.) I’ve sown my seed, I’ve done my best. To sleep I’ll go and get some rest.

Narrator:But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat…

Enemy Ed:I’m enemy Ed. I hate Fred. He planted good seed here and there, he planted good seed everywhere. But not to worry, not to fret, I’ll foil his plan; I’ll win the bet. His field he planted with good seed.

Enemy Ed: But I’ll undo it with my weed. I’ll foil his plan. I’ll foil it good, I’ll sow bad weed among his seed. I’ll sow it here, I’ll sow it there, I’ll sow my bad weed seed everywhere. (Sow weed, evil laugh.)

Narrator:When the wheat sprouted (good wheat grows) and formed heads (heads pop out of sprouts)…

Wheat 1:Praise God. Wheat 2:From Whom.. Wheat 1:All Blessings Flow… Wheat 2:Praise him…

Wheat 1:You seedlings here below… Wheat 2:Praise him… Wheat 1:Above you heavenly hosts…

Wheat 2:Praise farmer, sun… Wheat 1:And holy soil… Wheat All:A-men.

Narrator:Yes, they were righteous seeds. But then the weeds also appeared. (Weeds spring up around each wheat.)

Weed 1:(Burps.) Hey beautiful, what’s new? Mind if I hang around and party with you? What’s a beautiful blade like you doing in a field like this?

Weed 2:Baby, I dig your rich soil, your nutrients, your stems. Come with me to the compost pile and we’ll make beautiful mulch together.

Narrator:Yes. It wasn’t pretty. They used every line in the book and couldn’t even rhyme them. The owner’s servants came to him and said…

Servant 1:Farmer Fred, what were you thinking, what have you done? You’ve sown bad seeds out in the sun.

Servant 2:Didn’t you sow good seed here and there, didn’t you sow good seed everywhere?

Servant 1:Where then did the weeds come from? Was it not good seed you’d sown in the sun?

Farmer Fred:An enemy did this. I know it was done. He’s planted the bad seed out in the sun. He’s planted the weed seed out in my field. He’s planted the weed seed to mess up my yield.

Farmer Fred: He’s done it to ruin my plan but he knows, regardless of weed seed, my good seed it grows.

Servant 2:The weeds have to be stomped out, they have to be killed, they have to be stopped or they’ll ruin your field.

Servant 1:We have to do something, we have to act quick; let’s apply Round-Up before they grow thick.

Servant 2:Perhaps we could pull them, a surgical strike with pin-point precision, smart bombs, and the like.

Servant 1:Perhaps we could remove just the weeds from the field… Servant 2:…and leave the wheat standing Servant 1:…and still get a yield.

Farmer Fred:No!!! No Round-Up, no pulling, no surgical strikes. No starting over or any such likes. While removing the weeds we could damage the wheat, so we’ll remain patient, and wait and be neat.

Servant 2:So you’re going to just let them grow together like this: the wheat among tares, the weed among wheat? I don’t understand it, but you are the man who sowed them, who loves them, who makes the whole plan.

Farmer Fred:So we’ll leave them alone, we’ll leave them to grow, we’ll water and nourish, and watch every row. ‘Til harvest we’ll grow them together we will; but then we’ll take time to split up the field.

Farmer Fred: We’ll bind, and we’ll tie, and we’ll burn all the weeds. But we’ll gather the produce of every good seed. We’ll bring the wheat into my barn, and every good seed will be safe on my farm.

Narrator: Jesus’ disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” And Jesus read the skit’s credits as follows:

Narrator: The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world. The good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one. The enemy who sows the bad seed is the devil.

Narrator: The harvest is the end of the age. The harvesters are angels. As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire. But the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.
