Dr. Seuss Inspired House

Dr. Seuss Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to the world as the beloved Dr. Seuss, was born in 1904 on Howard Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. Went to college to become a College Professor After college he met his wife, a children’s book author He then began to pursue a career as a cartoonist While serving in the Army, he was introduced to the art of animation He created over 44 children’s books over his life and over 200 million copies have been sold. He has had his books published in more than 15 different languages

STEP 1: We are Rolling! We need to roll out the slabs first because they need to become leather hard before we can construct our Dr. Seuss inspired houses. The slaps should be between ¼ inch and ½ inch thick Since you do not know exactly how much you will need, you should roll out a minimum the size of 3 sheets of paper - It does not need to be one giant slap It is important that you roll out your slabs the same width – if an area is too thin, it will break

Step 2: Come up with an idea, man! Remember to include in your sketch: The shape of the front/back and each side of your house How many windows are there and where are they going to be placed within your sketch Is there a door and does it lead to an exit? Are you using geometric shapes, organic shapes or both? Remember to include a base for your house to sit on Do not forget to include a sketch for your roof Draw a sketch of your Dr. Seuss inspired house to the same size of the house you plan to build House size should not be taller or wider than 6 to 8 inches

Step 3: Use your sketch as a template over your clay slabs and trace your design into the clay SKETCH CLAY CUTOUTS Step 4: Then cut out your walls with a fettling knife or other clay tool

Step 5: The 3 S’s!!! Score: Mark up the areas you want to connect with your clay tools Slip: Add the watered down version of your clay to both sides you are attaching. This is the glue for clay! Sew: Use your fingers or a clay tool to attach the two sides together

What Scoring, slipping and sewing look like!

Step 6: REPEAT! Repeat the process of scoring, slipping and sewing until you have put together your house. Remember, you will need to build your house in stages 1.Start with 1 side and the front 2.Then add the back 3.Then add the other side 4.After it is all together you will carefully take out your windows before you add your roof 5.Now add on your roof and any other details

Vocabulary you need to know: Geometric shapes Organic shapes Actual Line Implied Line Leather hard Score Slip Sew
