World Class Standards Smart Grids Roadmap for work in ETSI: introduction Emmanuel Darmois © ETSI All rights reserved Scoping Meeting, June 14 th 2010

World Class Standards Outline Disclaimer This presentation is just a support for discussion. It is based on the good things from the earlier workshop sessions and includes all the mistakes brought by the presenter ! Subjective notes from the meeting Context Scoping Collaboration Some suggestions Coordination outside ETSI Coordination within ETSI 2 ETSI/Smart Grids Scoping Meeting – June 14, 2010

World Class Standards ICT meets Power : the horizontal view Service Plane Billing e-Commerce Subscription management and activation Business processes Control and Connectivity plane OAM functions Protection and restoration Traffic engineering Connectivity and routing Virtualization Access technologies Time synchronization Energy Plane Sensors Electric storage and interconnection Transmission and Distribution Power Systems, etc. … with some vertical enablers Privacy Security Data models 3 Service Energy IP Network Control ETSI/Smart Grids Scoping Meeting – June 14, 2010

World Class Standards Split of domains to identify key interfaces Smart Metering Grid domain In the house Report backInformation to the customer Information to Electrical SP Demand/response Electr. Service Provider Possible domains of work of ETSI 4 ETSI/Smart Grids Scoping Meeting – June 14, 2010

World Class Standards Subjective Meeting Notes Power Network: Core, Distribution and Private networks 80% of customer trust is needed to make Smart Metering happen This is a very complex ecosystem Scope of ETSI work: The vertical view: at and after the meter (not much before) The horizontal view: mostly at service and connectivity plane Plus the enablers, in particular Privacy Scope of ETSI work: M2M is Grid-agnostic (flexible architecture applies to power, gas, …) Focus of work on Smart Grids is Power Use cases, Reference Architecture : only one (set), please ! A gateway is a gateway is a gateway (or not ?): shared meanings ? It is not about "us and them" 2010 is key to have our messages cut across Too many wheels have been invented and never used ! 5 ETSI/Smart Grids Scoping Meeting – June 14, 2010

World Class Standards Smart Grids Ecosystem A very complex eco-system Nobody can do it alone -> Coordination and reuse of work are key Close relationship of Standardization and Regulation Developing a European view on Standards is a must 6 ETSI/Smart Grids Scoping Meeting – June 14, 2010

World Class Standards What next ? Coordination outside ETSI CEN/CENELEC/ETSI Joint working Group 2010 is the window of opportunity to push an ESO agenda in EU SG TF Completion of the C/C/E JWG Document is the main milestone Workshop on Reference Architecture alignment to be organized soon EU Smart Grids Task Force Continuation of participation to work in 2010 based on C/C/E JWG work Short term Ensure ETSI contribution to EU TF EG1 Chapter 11 Coordination inside ETSI No need to create a specific structure for the time being Ensure work done in one TC is visible and understandable to others Prepare a second workshop later in 2010 ? 7 ETSI/Smart Grids Scoping Meeting – June 14, 2010

World Class Standards Connecting Things Integration of various "things" to create new networked services Current Work RFID Encryption GRID M2M, Smart metering Wireless Medical Devices Wireless Factory Standards Partners CEN, CESI, CONTINUA Health Alliance, ENISA, ESMIG, IHE, OGF In progress: HL7 Research Partners CASAGRAS, GRIFS Possible Future Work Mobile health assistant Wireless robotics GRID/Cloud computing People and things connected to the benefit of people Contributing ETSI groups eHEALTH, ERM [28, 30, 34, TLPR, UWB], GRID, M2M, PLT, TISPAN, USER Mandates M/436, M/441 ETSI Cluster ID D. World Class Standards Coordination of work within ETSI Suggestion to coordinate within the "Connecting Things" Cluster To allow cross-fertilization between TCs To manage potential overlaps With the appropriate mechanisms (to be discussed with ETSI Board) A possible way to see the participation of TCs (to be refined !!!)
