Presentation transcript:

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June MICE News Collaboration meeting 8-11 June 2006 at Fermilab complete review of the project. for those who were not there consult transparencies -- or for the lazier ones the wrap up main highlights summarized here thanks to Alan Bross, Malcolm Ellis, Jean-Sebastien Graulich and Jim Norem for organisation of the meeting and agenda and Dinner! Wrap up was much helped by ‘what can go wrong’ session… self evaluation is very efficient! should follow-up!

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June MICE SCHEDULE modification since OSAKA: -- ISIS schedule shift -- excellent news from spectrometer solenoids (being ordered!) -- better news on coupling coils (MUCOOL coil, from DOE; MICE coils, from Harbin ICST)

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June  Aspirational MICE Schedule now (reasonably optimistic as always) 15 September 2007 NB: picture does not include target, beam line, hall infrastructure, electronics, DAQ, shifters etc… ! STEP I 15 November 2007 STEP III: Winter 2008 STEP II STEP IV Fall 2008 STEP V Spring 2009 STEP VI Fall 2009

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June New collaborators and funding news Japan bid (by Y. Mori U. Kyoto) was not approved for 2006 (tracker, L.H2 absorber) will re-apply next year. Italy: will be discussed after test beam if that is succesful (TOF, E-M-Cal) UK: MICE phase II bid in preparation US -- excellent report by MUTAC! -- DOE has agreed to 300k$ of supplemental funds for the MUCOOL Coupling Coil (CC) (still waiting for the answer of NSF on the CC request) CERN refurbishment of RF approved, conditional to UK contribution to CLIC New collaborators will apply to join MICE at the CM 15: -- New Hampshire (U. Bravar et al.) simulation, optics, analysis -- Cockcroft Inst.& Lancaster University (R. Seviour) RF cavity surface studies China-- ICST Harbin in People’s Republic of China (Lin Jia, Li Wang) propose to build two coupling coils if MICE collaboration provides power supplies, cryocoolers and SC conductor.

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June TOF Ennoying questions: TOF2 said to be mid Can this be brought forward? what will happen with x-ray radiation when we run with RF? Issue: particles crossing material in the downstream end of the spectrometer this is a beam of MeV/c, all generated with 4T field in spectrometer. How about the size of the hole in the shielding Preparations of TOF0 test on-going (Milano-Pavia) double layer allows measurement of resolution, meast is of this is the main aim of the test

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June PHASE II discussion main issue: accelerator physics case for MICE PHASEII. Q: why do we test study II cooling cell rather than the (simpler one) of Study Iia, or the ISS recommended one or the more powerful one of Muons Inc..? A1: The MICE hardware is very mature and ready to construct and test -- in fact it is the only one in that state, other possibilities (such as study IIa,b, or ISS recommended) a re not studied and designed quite yet. A2: Equipment that MICE builds is not only useful to test Study II cooling channel, it (in particular AFC module) has flexibility for many other optics or absorber materials, and MICE is precise enough to evaluate small expected (and unexpected) differences between them. A3: The RF modules are absolutely essential in demonstrating the fact that beam can be reaccelerated, in all cooling systems envisaged.

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June MANX minimal step (no RF) (T.Roberts)

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June To be achieved by next CM meeting at RAL: (incomplete to-do list) target and beam line solutions to be found for several target problems: 1. heating at high drive current ? would like to see an engineering design ready for target test in October organize tour of target at CM :-) beam line pending issues -- correctors -- verify all the optics we want(corners of matrix!) status report VC end of July check the diffuser (a small edge effect at 200 MeV/c) (resp of Tracker group) check also the scraping at the downstream end! -->He window and radiation shield are also responsibility of tracker! Magnetic shield 2 could be responsibility of TOF group --> Palladino Response to H2 safety committee decisions on HAZOP interim report TB end of July. review in September Decisions on cryocoolers to be placed on agenda of TB to be followed to Exec. Board (Decision is said to be: Pulse Tube for everything except the VLPC cryostat) blue/red = exec-board comment or decision

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June Test beam in Frascati! will report in VCs in July & August Finalize downstream PID size and shield setup (VC in 19 july) Study issue of RF x-rays to TOF --> on Yagmur Production of first ‘final’ tracker station progress report in september Finalize DAQ scheme report after test beam i.e. August Understand precisely the schedule of Spectrometer solenoids report on 19 july what happens from delivery in US to operation in RAL Submission of UK Phase II bid First engineering study of CC by Harbin VC in July Launch MICE data challenge! --> on Yagmur To be achieved by next CM meeting at RAL: (incomplete to-do list)

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June Other news: LHC schedule shifted a little: - The beam pipe closure date will be end of August 2007 (instead of end of June 2007). - After that there will still be a few weeks of controlled access to the experimental caverns. - This is followed by an LHC commissioning run with collisions at the injection energy ( GeV), until the end of Then there will be a shut-down during which the remaining machine sectors will be commissioned without beam to full energy (7 TeV). - After that the LHC will be brought into operation for the first physics run at 14 TeV, with the aim to integrate substantial luminosity by the end of (expected O(1fb-1)
