Irony is the contrast between what is expected, or what appears to be, and what actually is.

Lets read about John.

1. What does John mean by this statement? He is saying the opposite of how he really feels. 2. Does he actually believe it is going to be a great day? No way!

Verbal irony is the contrast between what is said and what is actually meant. You know, sarcasm. That sound was beautiful!

Vagrancy- the condition of being without a settled home or regular work, wandering from place to place, and living by begging. In many communities this is considered a crime.

1. What does Soapy at first hope will happen to him? He hopes he will be arrested and sent to jail for the winter. 2. Why doesnt it happen? Different odd circumstances come up which keep him from being arrested.

3. When does the result he hoped for actually occur? He gets arrested when he is standing in front of a church thinking about his life. 4. Why is the outcome a surprise? It is a surprise because Soapy had just decided to make the most out of his life and the reader is happy that Soapy has made this decision. His arrest is a terrible let-down.

Irony of situation refers to a happening that is the opposite of what is expected or intended.

1. At this point in the action, what do you know that none of the characters in the play (except the tall man) know? We know the tall man is the thief. 2. Why might the tall mans answers to the detectives questions mean more to you than the other characters in the play? We are going to be paying attention to his answers to see how the tall man will try to avoid being found out by the detective.

Dramatic irony occurs when the audience or reader knows more than the characters do.
