The Godhead ? 1. Aim: To explain some of the view that there are three in the Godhead. 2. The word Godhead is about the same as the words "Divinity" and "Deity". 3. QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GODHEAD *** How many are there in the Godhead? 4. What does the Bible teach? Is the word "trinity" found in the Bible? Is the Godhead really triplets? Is there one God or 3? 5. Our view of the Godhead is important because it influences what we believe and practice.

Theories about the Godhead Tritheism = 3 gods Mormons - Deut. 6:4 Arianism = Christ was created Jehovah’s Witnesses Jn.1:1 Sabellianism = only one Oneness Pentecostal 1. Theories about the Godhead: a. Tritheism i. Doctrine that there are three gods ii. Mormons believe in tritheism, and that the number of gods can increase iii. Not true - Deut. 6:4 - there is one God b. Arianism i. Teaches that God is eternal, but Christ was created being ii. Jehovah’s Witnesses hold this view - Jn. 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word” c. Sabellianism - a follower of Sabellius - 3rd century philosopher from Egypt i. There are some who say there is only one in the Godhead. ii. According to this view God is one person and manifests Himself to the world in three different ways. He plays all three roles, but not at the same time, but successively. iii. Those groups who teach “Jesus only” in godhead hold this theory

1. Use of the Term Godhead Acts 17:29 Romans 1:20 Colosians 2:9 KJV - The word "trinity" is not found in the Bible, but the fact is taught. It would be impossible to say that we can have a full understanding of it as humans, but the truth that there is one God in 3 persons (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is taught in the Bible I. USE OF THE TERM GODHEAD A. Found three times in N.T. and not at all in the O.T. in the KJV KJV

Acts 17:29 “we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.”

Rom. 1:20 “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse”

“For in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Col. 2:9 “For in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.

Acts 17:29 NKJV = ASV = NIV = Divine Nature Godhead Divine Being

Rom. 1:20 NKJV = ASV = NIV = Godhead Divinity Divine nature

NKJV = ASV = NIV = Godhead Deity Col. 2:9 A. These 3 three verses are the only times in the Bible the term Godhead is used 1. In each case it refers to the deity or the divine nature. 2. But it does not specify how many persons are in that divine nature. 3. These verses do not tell us if there is one, two, three or 10,000. 4. We must learn this from other places in the Bible. 5. Although there are only 3 verses that specifically uses the word Godhead, there are many verses that teach that there are three in the Godhead.

2. Three Members of Godhead “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” Matt. 28:18-20 II. THREE MEMBERS OF THE GODHEAD – BUT ONLY 1 GOD A. Mt. 28:18-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” 1. Jesus was ready to leave the earth and go back to his Father. 2. He gave this great commission to His apostles and to all of his people through them. 3. We are commanded to baptize those who have been taught in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This is not 3 immersions.

2. Three Members of Godhead “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all” 1 Cor. 12:4-6 1. I Cor. 12:4-6 “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.” a. Here we have the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. b. They are all mentioned in connection with miraculous gifts which were in existence in the early church.

2. Three Members of Godhead “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all” 2 Cor. 13:14 1. 2 Cor. 13:14 "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all." a. Paul invoked the blessings of the Godhead – the 3 - upon his readers. b. He called forth these blessings from three persons within the Godhead. 3. These blessings come from all three members of the Godhead and not just one person.

“Our Father who art in heaven” God the Father Spiritual Being “Our Father who art in heaven” Creator, Jehovah, Almighty, Lord God, Father Planner and Designer The three members of the Godhead 1. GOD the Father 2. He is a Spirit or spiritual being. 3. We are taught to address Him as "Our Father who art in heaven." 4. He is the Creator, Jehovah, the Almighty, Lord God, and Father. 5. He is always referred to in the masculine gender. 6. God is revealed to us in the Bible as supreme in wisdom, power, love, mercy, and justice. 7. He is the great Planner and Designer and creator of the universe.

“Son of Man” - “Son of God” Clothed in the Flesh Death on the cross Christ Many names and titles “Son of Man” - “Son of God” Clothed in the Flesh Death on the cross Existed before He came - Phil. 2:6 CHRIST 1. He has many names and titles in the Bible. Some of the names given to God are also applied to Christ 2. In His relationship to man He is said to be the "Son of Man". In his relation to God he is called "The Son of God.“ 3. He is the only member of the Godhead who has been clothed in the flesh. He was born of the Virgin Mary and lived in this body to accomplish the will of God. 4. He became obedient even to death upon the cross. 5. He was buried, He resurrected, and is now ascended back to heaven. 6. He existed before He came to earth. - Phil. 2:6-7 “who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men” 7. He is the Savior of man, and the Redeemer of our race.

Same nature as God and Christ Called the Comforter Other titles Holy Spirit Same nature as God and Christ Called the Comforter Other titles HOLY SPIRIT 1. When Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan, He came up immediately out of the water, the heavens were opened and the Spirit of God descended on Jesus in the form of a dove 3. This member of the Godhead has the same nature and essence as God and Christ. 4. The Holy spirit is called the Comforter and other titles are also given in the BIBLE.

The word used for God in Genesis 1:1 is "Elohim," In the Hebrew language the "im" ending indicates plurality. 2. This means that there was a plurality of Divine beings at the beginning when the heavens and the earth were created. 3. The Godhead was present and participated in the creation a. The Father, the first member of the Godhead, was present and planned the creation b. The Godhead Father = architect Son = Executor Holy Spirit = Revealer Conclusion 1. In the Divine Plan, the: a. Father is the Architect of the plan b. The Son is the Executor of the plan c. And the Holy Spirit is the Revealer of the plan 2. A good illustration of the Godhead is man - a. We are body, soul, and spirit b. We are not three persons, but a three-in-one person. 3. We are limited in our understanding of God b. It is almost like trying to explain what something looks like to a person who has been blind since birth c. But just because it is hard to understand does not mean it is not true. d. There are over 20,000 references to God and the Godhead in the Bible. e. A study of these will show that there are three persons in the Godhead, but one God Son = Executor Holy Spirit = Revealer

John 8:24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” A study of the Godhead is important - because we must believe that Jesus is God or we will be lost- Jn. 8:24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins”
