Welcome to Communications Technology …quite possibly the coolest course you’ll take in high school! 1a What is Communication.ppt

What is Communication?

It is the accurate transfer of information from a SENDER to a RECEIVER. Communication can be performed by people, animals or machines.

What is Communication? For communication to be successful, we must be sure that the message has the same meaning for the receiver as it did for the sender. To check if a message is understood, we can request FEEDBACK (asking person to repeat, questioning).

Person to Person Communication Can be either VERBAL (speaking) or NON-VERBAL (gestures, writing, facial expressions). We can use technology to enhance communication. Eg. phones, TV, speakers, computers

Person to Person Communication Technology allows for MASS COMMUNICATION (sending messages to many people). This includes MEDIA such as newspapers, TV, radio, magazines, the Internet, CD’s, videos, etc.

5 Main Reasons to Communicate 1. To INFORM e.g. Newspapers, news programs, brochures 2. To PERSUADE eg. Ads, salespeople, lawyers 3. To ENTERTAIN e.g. music, movies, games, books, television 4. To EDUCATE e.g. teachers, books, documentaries, newspapers 5. To CONTROL e.g. politics, computers, timers

The Communication Process Every communication process follows the same series of steps.

The Communication Process 1.A way of ENCODING the message (eg. video camera, microphone, computer keyboard). 2.A means of TRANSMITTING the message (eg. Recording head, radio antenna, computer modem). 3.A CHANNEL or route which the message takes (videotape, air, phone lines).

The Communication Process 4.A means of RECEIVING the message (vcr, radio receiver, antenna, modem, CD player). 5.A method of DECODING the message (monitor, speaker, printer, TV).

The Communication Process All messages are designed to reach a specific AUDIENCE. Ex. 1 – An ad for retirement planning probably won’t work well in a magazine for Canadian teens. Ex. 2 – Loud hip-hop music may be effective for a soft drink ad that appears on Much Music, but it wouldn’t be very useful for an insurance ad during “60 Minutes”.

We need to consider audience and cost when designing any form of communication. Effective communication requires: 1.planning 2.organization 3.analysis. The Communication Process

Congratulations! You survived your first comm tech note. Was that so bad?
