Parent Spalding Class “Civilization is not inherited; it’s advance depends upon the ability of each generation to fully communicate and teach its children the recorded wisdom of past ages. Teaching language to children is therefore the highest profession in every age.” - Romalda B. Spalding

Introductions Name What grade is your son/daughter? One thing you know about the Spalding program

What is the Spalding Method? Essential Elements spelling lesson, the writing lesson, the reading lesson and the educational philosophy Educational Philosophy Direct, sequential instruction Active participation Child Centered How your student sees Spalding in the classroom Handwriting, Phonics, and Spelling Why it works

Handwriting The thought process of having “Prefect Penmanship” 1. Specifically cognitive about the formation based on a teacher’s description 2. Being able to describe the formation his/herself 3. Subconscious formation of the letters

Handwriting The Six Features

Handwriting The Spalding Clock Clock Letters start at 2 o’clock a, c, d, f, g, o, s, qu

Handwriting Line Letters Most start at the TOP of the letter Start at the TOP b, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, t, u, v, w, x, y, and z Start at Three on the clock e

Handwriting What are teachers looking for??? Sitting on the baseline Starting at the midpoint Small letters that are half the size of the tall letters Correlation to the clock (round letters) The way the letters are formed

Handwriting Practice Time Clock Letters o and c Line Letters l, h, v and w

Phonograms What are phonograms? A phonogram is a single letter, or a fixed combination of two, three or four letters, that is the symbol for one sound in a given word. English has 70 phonograms These phonograms represent the 45 basic sounds used in speaking

Phonograms Why do phonograms help beginning readers? Why do phonograms help established readers? Why do phonograms help spelling throughout life?

Phonograms Oral Phonogram Review What is an OPR? students and teacher are participating in the recitation of new and mastered phonograms 1 st time - teacher says the phonogram and the students repeat 2 nd time - students say the phonogram and the teacher asks clarifying questions

Phonograms Let’s Practice Oral Phonogram Review 1 st time – I say the sound and you repeat 2 nd time – You say the sounds and I ask you questions of where the phonogram may or may not come in a word

Phonograms Written Phonogram Review What is a WPR? teacher says a phonogram students write the phonogram IMMEDIATE feedback – teacher shows the answer after each phonogram is written DELAYED feedback – teacher shows the answer after all the phonograms are written

Phonograms Let’s Practice Written Phonogram Review I say the phonogram You write the phonogram on your paper I will give you IMMEDIATE feedback by showing you the phonogram card Please change your answer if you aren’t correct… Learn from your mistakes – don’t ignore them!

Spelling and Marking Always underline multi-letter phonograms Always put a small number above the phonogram when it doesn’t say it’s first sound Always write rules that apply at the end of the word Rule 4 – vowels at the end of a syllable usually say their long vowel sound Rule 17 - usually double the l, s or f at the end of a one syllable word Rule 26 – always capitalize a proper noun Rule 6 – use y not i at the end of an English word Always break the word into syllables

Spelling and Marking MARK THESE WORDS she the is my ago will Sunday
