Invited An Introduction

What has brought you here? Looking for a magic bullet Obligation to learn the latest thing The Spirit of God leading you to … read, think, do …. something different

Let’s begin with thanks To God, who is always ahead of us, doing, shaping, seeking, inviting

Now, back to you … we suspect: you already know that you need to do something different The culture around us has changed, and so has the whole landscape of faith

The new reality: A serious decline in church attendance The vast majority of Canadians don’t belong to a church The rules of engagement have changed

This new reality … Is not the problem … our attitude to it is the problem Bears with it some very good news

The good news in our situation: A mission field … right on our doorstep ….the nonchurched & dechurched People who, like us, have a spiritual hunger or curiosity

We propose a different way to consider our situation: Instead of bemoaning the disintegration of Christendom …. Let’s see Christendom as a time …. when we didn’t have to exercise our whole Christian identity..... a time when we didn’t need to tell the Christian story

Let’s begin to re-tool and re-fit: Remember … who we are, and to whom we belong A sent people …. Sent out with a message Inviting others into communion with God Extending the invitation …. involves everyone

But first … what are we inviting people to?

What are we inviting people to? To learn and join the way of Jesus Christ A generous, loving people, committed to the good news of Jesus Christ …. that transforms lives

But beware In admitting our new reality and embracing invitation … God will re-form us That will involve change That will mean both pain and possibility

Core assumptions We offer a love that we have been given Community focused Relationship grounded An attitude of the heart and mind Grounded in the Christian story Based on an adult learning model

Invited: A parish/congregation based resource Six study sessions & six videos To inspire and equip Christians to share their faith Using contemporary & ancient stories of invitation

The six sessions: 1.Why invite? 2.Whose invitation is it anyway? 3.So who is invited? 4.What gets in the way of us inviting? 5.What does inviting look like today? 6.What are the risks & rewards of inviting?

The format of the six sessions: Opening prayers Introduction of the theme Bible Study: ancient narratives of invitation Contemporary narratives + reflection Closing prayers

Goals for our time together here: Get the word out about this resource Get feedback in this pilot stage Leadership development Potential pilot parishes self-identified Encouragement

A taste of three sessions: #1 Why invite? #3 Who is invited? #5 What does inviting look like today?

Session #1 Why invite?
