Presentation transcript:

Mary Budds research shows What you do after asking a question impacts on your students Many teachers ask two or three questions per minute Then only a few seconds before moving on Often they answer their own questions They expect a response within 0.9 seconds Introduce wait time

When you ask a question - use wait time When you ask an open ended question Wait 3 – 10 seconds before asking for a response Ignore the waving hands Ask random students to respond Or use think – pair – partner response

Research is showing that when you change your questioning style to include wait time That discipline improves Teachers and students ask better questions (requiring higher order thinking skills) Student academic achievemen t improves But it must be taught to become a HABIT

Wait time gives time for Increased metacognition Time to access prior knowledge Time to respond with accuracy and precision

Wait time helps To reduce impulsivity The student to reflect All students to focus

Wait time supports these Habits of Mind Thinking interdependently Striving for accuracy Listening with understanding and empathy
