Going Green - Outdoor Ty House Model: S

1 st Floor North

2 nd Floor North

Orientation House The longest wall should face north for the maximum solar benefits. A lot of windows should be on the south side so the winter sun can heat the house. The most frequently used rooms should be located on the winter side of the building.

Using Plants to Reduce Energy Evergreen trees will protect your home from the winter winds so you wont have to use as much energy to heat your house. If you have a shade tree to shade the your home in the summer you wont have to use as much energy to cool your house.

Plant Arrangement The big trees such as the Ironwood and the Tulip will go on the north, south and west sides of the house so it shades your house from the hot summer sun. Also shrubs like Arborvitae and Dogwood will go under the trees and next to the house so you dont have to look at the ground when you look out the window.

Conserving Energy Using solar power saves you money because it is a free source of energy. You can also sell the excess energy you get to the electric company.

Water Recycling Grey water systems reduce your fresh water use. Also it reuses your waste water.

Saving Water Rainwater harvesting takes the rain water that falls on your roof and makes it so you can use it. One inch of rain fall on a 1000 foot roof produces 623 gallons of water that goes down the gutter and then gets wasted.
