1 Where is the Greenwich Peninsula?

2 The Millennium Village
All the houses have computers connected to fast internet. The fire alarms are linked to the local fire station. You share gardens with your neighbours so you get to know them. The shops, school and health centre are all close to or in the village. Waste water from showers is filtered and used to flush toilets – saving water. The houses have insulation and south-facing glass walls to trap heat inside the house. All houses have energy saving appliances such as fridges, washing machines and dishwashers.

3 Shops Water is collected for the roofs of shops to help water plants.
The local Sainsbury's makes some of it’s own electricity by wind power and solar power. People can have food delivered right to their house using internet shopping. The supermarket has banks of earth on either side to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. The roof is glass to let in lots of light.

4 Transport Cars cause pollution and clog up streets, so people are encouraged not to drive. There is a very good bus service. North Greenwich tube is right next to the O2. There are lots of safe cycle tracks. These allow people to cycle without being worried about traffic. There are not many parking spaces – this means people are forced not to drive. Places like schools, houses and shops are close together.

5 Eco-Park and the Environment
The park provides open space for people to enjoy. Used bottles, cans, plastic and paper are collected and recycled. All the building materials can be recycled. The eco-park has reeds and salt marshes to attract birds. There are lots of lakes and ponds. Over 12,000 trees have been planted.

6 The O2 Used to be called the Millennium Dome.
Used as a venue for concerts and meetings. Brings lots of money to the area. Brings lots of people to the area.

7 Glossary Insulation – Something that is added to homes to stop heat escaping. Pollution – Nasty gases that make it hard to breathe and damage the environment. Solar Power – Making electricity from sunlight. Tube – An underground train system in London connecting different areas together. Wind Power – Making electricity from the wind using windmills.
