Slide 1 EDI for Returns Benefits to a Retailer BISAC – March 10, 2006

Slide 2 EDI for Returns – Benefits to a Retailer Why would a Retail Bookseller care about using EDI for Returns? Why not just toss the books in a carton and wait for credit? Primarily, to cut cost from the supply chain! –Control –Efficiency –Speed

Slide 3 EDI for Returns – Benefits to a Retailer Control Assuming EDI integrated with Inventory Control –Know what has been removed from inventory –For what you should get credit With EDI (ASN) –Be able to identify whats missing by carton if full credit is not received –Substantiate losses in transit –Show receipt if carrier scans upon delivery Make reconciliation more palatable for all parties

Slide 4 EDI for Returns – Benefits to a Retailer Efficiency Retailers with Distribution Centers: –Use reverse order filling systems to pull Returns –Most of system already in place –Minimal learning on part of staff Retailers without Distribution Centers –Use reverse of sales processing –Most of system already in place –Minimal learning on part of staff With EDI (ASN) –No paper packing list should be necessary

Slide 5 EDI for Returns – Benefits to a Retailer Speed Retailer must send ASN promptly With a trusting relationship, vendor should be able to process much more quickly, since data entry is all or greatly eliminated Accurate credit (preferably electronic) should be available much more quickly Any discrepancies can be addressed while the Return is fresh
