Move It! Shake It! Manipulate It! Make and Take Grades 3 – 5 Rachel Rundstrom Patricia Allen 8/22/2012

What Todays Is About 0 What we are sharing today has been borrowed, stolen, or thought of in the shower or at 2 a.m.! You have probably heard of some of them, used some of them, hated some of them, and maybe loved some of them. 0 We hope you can take away at least one idea you may want to try or recreate to use in your classroom. 8/22/2012

Making It Mean Something 0 Mathematics is not just computation and getting the right solution. Mathematics involves problem solving, reasoning, communication, and making connections. 0 This comes through application and practice. 0 Rich, independent activities students can be completing while you are meeting with small groups…not busy work! 8/22/2012

Setting the Stage 0 Set norms/expectations as a class for task time. 0 Teach routines 0 where to get materials 0 how to clean up before leaving a task 0 what to do when you finish early 0 Practice transitions 0 Use a signal 0 Explicit directions 8/22/2012

Your Task 0 Rules: 0 Each group should have an envelope to start with. Open the envelopes, find the clue cards, and pass them out to members of the group. 0 When you get your clue, you may look ONLY at your own clue. You may not look at anyone elses. You may share your clue by telling others whats on it, but you may not show it to anyone else. 0 If you have a question, you must check with your group first. If your group agrees that everyone has the same question, you may all raise your hands and we will come to assist you. 8/22/2012

Takes 0 Bizz Buzz 0 Summer Flash Cards (all use cards or dice) 0 Circle and Stars 0 Multiplication Top-It 0 Multiplication Quick Draw 0 Face Off Multiplication 0 Spiral 0 Going to Boston 0 Make Total Three 0 Roll 5 (version of target number with accountability) 8/22/2012

Make Stations 0 Learning tasks are organized by CCSSM domain. 0 Take what you like, leave what you dont (no hard feelings) 0 If you have other ideas, please share on the chart paper. We will distribute to everyone after the workshop. 8/22/2012

Tips for Management 0 You come in Monday morning and realize you didnt plan stations during math workshop. Some materials you need on hand for a quick center: 0 Sheet protectors 0 Dry Erase Markers 0 Whiteboards 0 Playing Cards 0 Dice 0 Counters 0 Hundreds Charts 0 Index Cards 0 Card Stock 8/22/2012
