College Admission Glossary Handout #1 – Learn the Lingo!

Why Engage in Rigorous Coursework??? “Without preparation, opportunity is an empty promise.” -Alan Page, Minnesota Supreme Court Justice

College might not be for everyone, but knowledge is. How the World has Changed?

1900 Workplace Demands Highly skilled Low skilled Avg. age to enter work force Avg. age to leave work force Life expectancy 47

2010 Workplace Demands Highly skilled Low skilled Avg. age to enter the workplace 21 Number of times to change jobs 5-8 Est. Life expectancy in 2100 >80

Out of 100 9th Graders

70 Will Graduate From High School

44 Will Enter College

30 Will Return to College For Their Sophomore Year! WHY???

It’s the Small Habits of Mind! 1. Stamina to read complex text and work to understand meaning to commit to rigor even though you know it’s challenging “Eustress” vs. “Distress” (top athletes feel “EUSTRESS” before competition because they are prepared!) 2. Study Skill Behavior homework as a habit – that will translate into “studying as a habit” 3. Stress-Management time-management is key 4. Self-Management relationships with Teachers, Administrators, Peers, etc. – recognize those roles as “resources” resisting distractions - from David Conley’s “Rethinking College Readiness” (Handout #2)

21 Will Earn a Bachelor's Degree within Six Years Source: The National Center for Higher Education Management Systems Progress & Completion dataThe National Center for Higher Education Management Systems REPEAT!!! Stamina Study Skills Stress Management Self-Management HOW????

Thoughts to Consider… College matters — for life A college education is a gateway to success in today’s knowledge-based, global economy. College is more than a classroom. It’s an important opportunity to learn and grow as a person, gaining independence, confidence and life skills. College graduates earn an average of $22,000 more per year than high school graduates.

Average Earnings and Tax Payments of Full- Time Year-Round Workers at Age 25 or Older, by Education Level, 2011 $29,200

Why Challenge yourself now??? Students who take AP courses and exams are more likely than their peers to complete a bachelors degree in four years or less. (Source: Camara, Wayne. (2003). College Persistence, Graduation, and Remediation. College Board Research Notes (RN-19). New York, NY: College Board.)

Student Demographic AP Exam Grade of 3 or higher African-American28% higher Hispanic28% higher White33% higher Low-Income26% higher Not Low-Income34% higher Source: Dougherty, Mellor & Jian, 2006 AP Participation and Likelihood of College Graduation College Graduation Rate differences between “matched” AP and non-AP students* *Matched students are those who have similar family backgrounds and standardized test scores

First Generation College Students: Visualize Success!!

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Why Engage in Rigorous Coursework?

Great College Research Resources MyCollegeQuickstart – personal and based on PSAT (AP Potential) BigFuture – a tool for students to start researching for themselves – let’s see how it works!

Handout #3 – Big Future Website

Let’s pretend you want to go to FSU… Click “Applying” to see specifics about what FSU wants!

Here’s where you see what FSU looks for in its applicants… The school ranks what it desires from applicants in order from “Very Important” to “Considered”.

Throughout the site, you’ll find other kind of “college-ready” information – like financial aid…

So, what can we do at home? Think SPRITE!!! If you are planning to be “college-ready”, you need to be “ready for the world.” So, practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening about “wordly” topics. To bridge the gap from school to the “worldly topics”, find ways to integrate SPRITE from the past and present: S ocial and Scientific P olitical, Philosophical, and Psychological R elevant Issues in the News I ntellectual (art, history, drama, literature, etc.) T echnological E nvironmental and Economic

What does Crestview High School Offer? – Handout #4 Look at the AP course offerings each year. Know your strengths and weaknesses and talk to your counselor.
