Understanding section The objectives of this section are to: ðExplain why an understanding of learning theory can inform classroom practice ðProvide an introductory description of some of the most useful learning theories ðIdentify the main ways in which these theories inform teaching and learning ðHighlight the limitations and major criticisms of these theories

Assessment section The objectives of this section are to: ðProvide a definition of assessment ðCompare formative and summative assessment ðCompare norm and criterion-referenced assessment ðDescribe curriculum-based assessment ðExplore the relationship between diagnostic testing and labelling ðDescribe the use of checklists ð Introduce rubrics as a form of assessment ð Emphasise the importance of the instructional hierarchy

Intervention section The objectives of this section are to: ðIntroduce a systems approach to teaching and learning ðProvide a summary of the most effective evidence- based interventions ðProvide guidelines for giving effective feedback to learners ðIntroduce the concept of learning scaffolding and describe some of the strategies that may be employed within this approach ð Emphasise the importance of practice and rehearsal ð Explore the concepts of reinforcement and punishment and how they may be applied to social behaviour ð Provide an overview of differentiation and the use of individual education plans ð Describe the elements involved in metacognition ð Provide a model for the effective deployment of additional help in classrooms

Intervention setting After learning about different strategies in this section, participants write down how they plan to achieve their goals

Case studies To provide examples of a range of learners illustrating: ðassessed needs of the individual ðinterventions which have been put in place ðlearners response to the interventions and progress made

Course Forums ð Tutors and students can communicate through online discussions ð You will introduce yourselves on the forums today p15 Maslow's hierarchy of needs Make a list of the optimum personal conditions for a student to learn. Give an example of how the school environment can enhance predisposition to learning. Share one improvement that you can suggest.

Accreditation To pass the course you need to: ðRead all the course content ðComplete two quizzes ðTake part a minimum number of forum discussions ðWrite three goals ðWrite three interventions ðAttend face to face sessions as arranged by your tutor ðComplete the post course evaluation ð90 days after you have finished the course (and passed) complete the goal attainment scaling
