UN-HABITAT Inter-Agency Task Force on Disaster Reduction 8 th Meeting, Geneva, Nov Working Group # 3 Tools and Best Practices for Risk and Vulnerability Analysis at the Local and Urban Levels

UN-HABITAT Tools... Working Group 3 is presently creating an inventory of risk analysis and vulnerability assessment tools particularly for local and urban applications, which can be easily accessed both by UN-ISDR partners and the general public through the Internet.

UN-HABITAT UN-HABITAT and UNDP in collaboration with the Asia Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) and the Organisation of American States (OAS) have taken the lead in the development of this activity. Tools...

UN-HABITAT The main outputs will be: A Register of tools and practices for risk- vulnerability-impact assessment (national & local level). The register will be geographically structured and according to regionally relevant parameters/thematic areas. Annotated comments, which accompany the register assisting the user with identifying appropriate tools by describing their purpose, the situations they have been applied in, and the decision-making processes they can support. A Network and referral facility of practitioners and institutions active in the area of risk assessment.

UN-HABITAT This will be done in incremental phases: Phase I Preliminary version of the register. Phase II Updated version of Register and annotated comments. Phase III Publication and dissemination of up-dated version of the register and its annotated comments, as well as the referral facility.

UN-HABITAT At present the project is in its first phase, namely the web-site architecture, the intensive collection of tools and information, the development through consultation of criteria and parameters defining best practice, and the organisation of the material in an accessible manner.

UN-HABITAT Resources have recently been secured for this activity from UNDP, UN-HABITAT and the ISDR Secretariat. The project will be completed within one year; the inventory will then be permanently up-dated on-line and selected tools applied in practice.
