BODY SYSTEMS INTRO NOTES

DIGESTIVE STRUCTURES MOUTH: BEGINNING OF DIGESTION STOMACH: ACIDS AND MUSCLES BREAK DOWN FOOD SMALL INTESTINE ABSORBS NUTRIENTS FROM FOOD LARGE INTESTINE ABSORBS WATER FUNCTION BREAKS DOWN FOOD INTO SUBSTANCES THAT CELLS CAN ABSORB AND USE.

CIRCULATORY STRUCTURE HEART: MUSCLE THAT PUSHES BLOOD THROUGH ARTERIES ARTERIES: CARRY BLOOD AWAY FROM HEART THE HAS OXYGEN AND NUTRIENTS VEINS: CARRY BLOOD TO THE HEART THAT IS LOW IN OXYGEN AND HIGH IN WASTE FUNCTION DELIVERY SYSTEM OF THE BODY. IT DELIVERS NUTRIENTS AND OXYGEN THROUGHOUT THE BODY CELLS AND PICKS UP WASTE.

RESPIRATORY STRUCTURE LUNGS TAKE IN OXYGEN INTO THE BODY AND RELEASE CARBON DIOXIDE DIAPHRAGM MUSCLE THAT FORCES THE LUNGS TO EXPAND AND CONTRACT AND BRING AIR INTO AND OUT OF THE LUNGS. FUNCTION BRINGS OXYGEN INTO THE BODY AND REMOVES CARBON DIOXIDE.

EXCRETORY STRUCTURE KIDNEYS IS A FILTER FOR THE BLOOD INCLUDES THE SWEAT GLANDS, THE LUNGS, THE KIDNEY SYSTEM, URINARY SYSTEM AND OTHERS. FUNCTION DISPOSES OF WASTES AND CONTROLS BODY FLUID LEVELS

IMMUNE STRUCTURE INCLUDES WHITE BLOOD CELLS THAT FIGHT BACTERIA AND VIRUSES FUNCTION FIGHTS INFECTION AND ILLNESS. INCLUDES THE WHITE BLOOD CELLS

SKELETAL STRUCTURE BONES, CARTILAGE, LIGAMENTS, TENDONS FUNCTION PROVIDE SUPPORT AND STRUCTURE TO THE BODY BLOOD CELLS ARE MADE IN BONE MARROW

MUSCULAR STRUCTURE MUSCLES INCLUDING VOLUNTARY AND INVOLUNTARY FUNCTION ALLOW MOVEMENT OF BONES AND BODY PARTS BY WORKING WITH THE NERVOUS AND SKELETAL SYSTEMS

NERVOUS STRUCTURE BRAIN, SPINAL CORD, NERVES FUNCTION RECEIVES STIMULI FROM INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE BODY AND RESPONDS TO CHANGE MAINTAINS HOMEOSTASIS WHICH IS THE REGULATION OF STEADY, LIFE-MAINTAINING CONDITIONS BY ALL OF THE BODY SYSTEMS

INTEGUMENTARY STRUCTURE INCLUDES SKIN (LARGEST ORGAN OF THE BODY), HAIR, AND FINGERNAILS FUNCTION THE SKIN PROTECTS AND PROVIDES A BARRIER TO KEEP OUT FOREIGN MATERIALS AND TO PREVENT THE BODY FROM DRYING OUT.

ENDOCRINE STRUCTURE GLANDS AND HORMONES FUNCTION REGULATES BODY FUNCTIONS THROUGH CHEMICAL MESSENGERS CALLED HORMONES, CONTROLS THINGS SUCH AS HOMEOSTASIS, DEVELOPMENT, AND GROWTH

REPRODUCTIVE STRUCTURE FEMALE: OVARIES, UTERUS, VAGINA MALE: TESTIS, PENIS, SCROTUM FUNCTION PERFORMS REPRODUCTION, CONTROLS MALE AND FEMALE FUNCTIONS AND BEHAVIORS
