 Mindset and Success Tech Fair Presentation Kimberly Manner April 29, 2014

Outcomes for the Workshop  Compare growth mindset and fixed mindset  Identify strategies for fostering growth mindset  Apply a 25-minute interactive learning module  Adapt learning module to participants’ own courses

Introducing the Jigsaw  Imagine trying to complete a jigsaw puzzle that has missing pieces.  Just as in a jigsaw puzzle, each piece—each student's part— is essential for the completion and full understanding of the final product. If each student's part is essential, then each student is essential; and that is precisely what makes this strategy so effective.

Jigsaw Instructions ① Read the article, making note of key points (here is where faculty could substitute the Reading Apprenticeship strategy of Talking to the Text) ② Identify who is in your Home Group ③ Move to the location where the group (on the top right corner of your article) is meeting ④ In groups of 4-6, discuss what you read ⑤ Return to your Home Group ⑥ Teach your section of the article to your Home Group

Reflection  Dweck says, “It is the belief that intelligence can be developed that opens students to a love of learning, a belief in the power of effort and constructive, determined reactions to setbacks.”  How can you adapt the activity we did today for use in your classroom? What outcomes do you anticipate? What challenges do you anticipate? What strategies could you use to overcome those challenges?
