The Art of Illustration

What is an Illustrator? An illustrator is a graphic artist who specialises in enhancing writing by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text. Adam Carruthers, Altona, Vic

The illustration may be intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually, or the illustration may be intended for entertainment, as in greeting cards, or cover art or interior art for books and magazines, or for advertisement, as on posters. Matt Clare has been working as an illustrator since He has done loads of editorial work for publications like The Big Issue, BRW, The Bulletin, The Age and AFR Boss magazine, as well as working on an ongoing basis with many advertising agencies and graphic designers. His style is simple and conceptual with lots of texture.

Most contemporary illustrators make their living creating artwork for use in children's books, advertising, newspapers and magazines. Pen and ink and airbrush artists traditionally dominated this realm. Joy Antonie I have been a professional artist for over 25 years working on a freelance basis for advertising agencies, as a story board artist, and for the publishing industry as a children's book illustrator. I have to date illustrated over 35 books that have been distributed worldwide. I have my fine art on show at a Bayside Gallery name "Suburban". I can be commissioned to do canvasses and portraits - and these can be viewed on my website: and I am currently working in Photosop, doing digital art. Always happy for freelance work!

Computers dramatically changed the industry, and today computers are used to produce most of the commercial illustrations. In Levent Efe studios, we generate Medical and Biological illustrations with an emphasis on accuracy and impact. We specialize in generating concepts on pharmaceutical promotion, patient education and editorial images for a broad range of clientele worldwide. All computer generated, accurate, and on time.

However, traditional illustration techniques are still popular, particularly in the field of book illustration. Watercolor, oil painting, pastels, wood-engraving, linoleum cuts, and pen and ink are some of the traditional techniques used by successful exponents of the art.
