Erasmus: Key Action 2

Project Title: Exploring Different Methods of Science Teaching to Increase Student Motivation and Promote Scientific Literacy

Aims of the project:  Motivating students by presenting science as being relevant to their everyday life experiences.  To encourage students to view science as being useful to all citizens and thus enhance scientific literacy.  To increase the number of students who take up science subjects at tertiary level.

Our Group We are a group of seven teachers who teach Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Core Science Our college is a secondary state school, called St. Clare’s College Pembroke. It is situated in the Northern coastal part of Malta. The school population is approximately 600 and the age group of our students is from years.

Our intention is to research and study different European curricula in order to find common teaching areas. Once the topics are established, specific lesson plans will be set up through collaboration and networking with different schools in European countries. Networking with educational specialists from universities in Malta and other European countries is also being encouraged.

Once the lessons are planned, they will be conducted in the participating countries, videotaped and evaluated for their instructional effectiveness.

Feedback will be exchanged between participating schools to improve science teaching and learning.

Different learner centred pedagogies will be undertaken and evaluated.

Important outcomes expected in this project include the availability of lesson plans and resources for other teachers.

As a preparation for this Erasmus project, we have already planned, video taped and discussed a lesson conducted in our school. The outcome was fruitful and we all learnt from each other. We are now looking forward to collaborate with other European Countries so as to share good teaching and learning practices.
