What is Supported Reading? One of the 5 teaching strategies for reading An opportunity to talk, read and think their way purposefully through a text Enables pupils to experience what real reading is within a supported environment one teacher + a class of pupils

Design of Learning Environment in SuRE How People Learn, Expanded Edition, p.134, Figure 6.1 Bransford et al. (1999) Community Learner centred Knowledge centred Assessment centred

In Supported Reading Lessons: Students: read independently with a purpose; give critical responses to the text; and talk about messages and meaning in the text. Teachers: use pre-reading tasks to activate prior knowledge; use effective questioning to foster critical thinking; and teach reading skills and strategies in context.

Through SuRE, we explore:  the impact of Supported Reading on student learning  effective strategies for the learning and teaching of the SuRE reading workshops  the use of appropriate reading texts and resources for KS2 Silent Reading Questioning

Seed School  Consolidate existing P4 and P5 units of work  One seconded teacher to develop and implement new units of work for P6  LETs in KS2 plan and teach SuRE workshops
