Lesson 18 Psalms of Promise Psalms 89, 132, 16, 110

 “A milestone of Old Testament Revelation”  Nathan’s prophecy (vv. 1-17) in many ways the most important part of the books of Samuel  Explanations of the prophecy are given by later OT prophets and inspired NT writers 2 Samuel 7

 David’s palace in Jerusalem built of the cedars of Lebanon  Lord has given rest (peace) from all his enemies  The ark dwells in tent curtains  David expresses concern to Nathan  Nathan responds – as friend? David Proposes a Templevv. 1-3

 Same night word of Lord comes to Nathan  Go tell David – “Would you build me a house to live in?”  God had not dwelt in a house but in a tent (tabernacle)  God had not asked the judges to build Him a house God Vetoes David’s Ideavv. 4-7

 The Lord reminds David of his humble beginning v.8  God has been with David, cut off his enemies before him, and made his name great  God will give His people a place and peace Promise to David vv. 8-11

 Like it was with the judges God promises David rest from enemies  Moreover, the Lord promises to make a house for David Promise to David vv. 8-11

 When David’s days are fulfilled and he is gone, God promises a physical offspring  He will build a house for God’s name  God will establish his throne forever  God will be his father, he will be God’s son Promise to David vv Spiritual – Jesus Christ

 When he commits iniquity, God will chasten him with the rod of men, with stripes from the sons of men  But God will not take His love from him as He did from Saul  David’s house, kingdom, throne will be established forever  Nathan spoke to David these things Promise to David vv Spiritual kingdom – church

 God did not permit David to build Him a house  God built David a house  Two parts—  Physical—kingdom of Solomon and descendants  Physical—temple in Jerusalem Summary

 God did not permit David to build Him a house  God built David a house  Two parts—  Spiritual—kingdom of Christ  Spiritual—temple the body of Christians; kingdom located in new Jerusalem Summary Revelation 5:2 Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?" …. 5 But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals."

Lesson 18 Psalms of Promise Psalms 89, 132, 16, 110

 Last Psalm in book 3  Written by Ethan the Ezrahite  v.1 Will sing of the mercy of the Lord forever  vv. 3-4 a covenant sworn with David to establish his seed forever and build up his throne to all generations Psalm 89

660 - I Will Sing Of The Mercies - 1.1

660 - I Will Sing Of The Mercies - 1.5

660 - I Will Sing Of The Mercies - 1.6

 vv Ethan praises Jehovah as He alone can only make such far reaching promises  vv God spoke in a vision to His holy ones (Nathan?); He has given help and exalted one chosen among the people. David, anointed with holy oil, established and strengthened Psalm 89 V7 God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.

 vv God’s lovingkindness with David, His covenant confirmed with him; God establishes his descendants forever, his throne as the days of heaven  vv Promise directly involves David’s seed, throne, children, but… Psalm 89

 vv David’s unfaithful children will not invalidate God’s promise to him; an eternal promise  vv The Psalm takes a turn for the worse, perhaps descriptive of the time of Rehoboam when the kingdom divides – Ethan could have lived into Rehoboam’s reign Psalm 89

 A Psalm of Ascents  Title does not give writer  Peter identifies writer in Acts 2 as David? Possibly Solomon writing about David (v 11)  vv. 1-5 David’s vow to build a house for the Lord Psalm 132

 vv The promise God gave to David  vv. 13ff Zion chosen as the Lord’s resting place, His people will be blessed who serve Him there  Acts 2:29-31 Peter refers to Psalm on day of Pentecost regarding Jesus Christ Psalm 132

 We don’t know how much David understood about the promise God gave; but the Spirit revealed to David resurrection from the dead would be required for the eternal nature of the throne/kingdom promise  vv Peter quotes from Psalm on day of Pentecost regarding Christ Psalm 16

 So… David knew God had sworn with an oath that from his physical offspring God would set One upon his throne and… David foresaw this and being a prophet he spoke of the Christ that would live and reign forever [BW] Psalm 16

 David predicts God will make One both Ruler and Priest!  King promised by God to be from tribe of Judah  Priests ordained by God to be of tribe of Levi  Thus, an astounding prophecy in David’s time Psalm 110

 v. 1 David gives the true nature of the Christ; not understood by the Pharisees even in Jesus’ time cf. Matt. 22:41-45  v. 4 A priest forever after the order of Melchizedek cf. Gen. 14:17-19; Heb. 5-7 Psalm 110

 v. 5 The Lord is at Your (L ORD ) right hand cf. Acts 2:32-36  Acts 2:34 "For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, Psalm 110 Jehovah Christ
