Pharmacy  Copley uses the RobotRX system, which uses bar coding technology that automatically picks, distributes, and restocks individually packaged medications. While participating in our Med Topics program, we could learn a large amount by simply following the doctors through the analyzing of information per each patient, and also by observing how doctors handle their processed information and turn it into a new or changed prescription. The changes to their medicine could also yield further results, whether positive or negative in their effects.

Neonatal Intensive Care  Designed to handle 24 hour coverage of newborns with medical challenges such as: –Premature infants born between weeks gestation and older. –Low-birth weight infants weighing as little as grams. –Babies born with congenital conditions or medical complications. –Infants requiring special care, surgery or other medical issues.  The Staff includes neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, perinatologists, obstetricians, and specially trained nurses  Rush Copley has the only designated Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the Fox Valley; there is a neonatologist available 24/7.  While at the hospital, Medical Topics students may be in charge of aiding nurses who are giving care to the newborns and observing the various procedures that are completed everyday to ensure the comfort and health of the newborns.

Cardiac Cath Lab Cardiac catheterization, also called coronary angiogram, is a test to check your heart and coronary arteries. It is used to check blood flow in the coronary arteries, blood flow and blood pressure in the chambers of the heart, find out how well the heart valves work, and check for defects in the way the wall of the heart moves. Biomedical Engineering  Application of engineering principles and techniques to the medical field.  Combines design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve healthcare diagnosis.

The ER  The ER is available 24 hours a day, every day.  It’s a level II Trauma Center.  Treats nearly 70,000 people each year.  Rush-Copley is approved by the State of Illinois as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics.  Type of treatments: general emergencies, poisoning, cold- related illness, heat-related illness, bee stings, burns/sunburns, unconsciousness, animal bites, etc.  One would expect to see all types of unexpected emergencies from non-life threatening to life threatening, and a lot of patient and doctor interactions.  Rush-Copley Emergency Room

PMR (Rehab)  PMR is for rehabilitation for patients with physical disabilities such as patients with brain or spinal injuries  On rotation, one could expect to see a lot of patient to patient and patient to doctor interactions  Physical activities are used to help with movements  The PMR is also designed so individuals can become used to normal life: true-to-life features such as an automobile, grocery store, kitchen and laundry area designed to replicate day-to-day activities and help inpatients prepare to be independent once more.  Team of 18 dogs on station for pet therapy
