PATIENT-DOCTOR III Summative OSCE Orientation SY

OSCE overview  All 3 rd year students, regular or irregular must participate in the OSCE in preparation for clerkship

OSCE overview  Each student will go through 18 stations (9 in the morning, 9 in the afternoon)  You will be given 2 minutes to perform the task(s) in each station after which the bell will ring twice, signaling you to move to the next station.  No feedback will be given.  There will be 1 rest station after the 4 th station  After the 9 th station, proceed to post-exam holding area for the morning session  For the afternoon session, you may go home immediately after the 9 th station

OSCE overview  Treat all patients as actual patients. Show courtesy, greet them, introduce yourself the way you would an actual patient.  A variety of tasks may be required of you, varying from:  Eliciting information from a patient  Performing physical examination  Interpreting laboratory tests  Making a diagnosis  Recommending a plan of management  Writing a prescription.  Any combination of the above tasks

OSCE overview  Tips for speed:  Give your nameplate to the proctor as you move to a new station, so he/she can write your name as you read the question  Perform only the tasks required.  ex. If you are asked to inform the patient of a diagnosis, then just inform the patient of his diagnosis (no need for lengthy explanations).  Do not panic!

OSCE Set-ups  Exam Area 1 at Physiology (6 th Floor)  Coordinator: Dr. JM Co  Subjects: Medicine, Pediatrics  3 stations for Medicine  1 station for Radiology  1 rest station  4 stations for Pediatrics  Venue:  Pre-exam Holding Area: Physiology Lecture Room  Post exam Holding Area: Little Amphitheater  Examination Area(s):  Physiology Modules (2 set ups will be made)

OSCE Set-ups  Exam Area 2 at Skills Lab (2 nd Flr.)  Coordinator: Dr. Arnold Angeles  Subjects: Surgery, Neuro, Anesthesia, OB  3 stations for Surgery  1 station for Anesthesia  1 rest station  4 stations for Neuro  Venue:  Pre-Exam Holding Area: JMC Auditorium I  Post-Exam Holding Area: Microlab  Examination Area(s): Skills Lab (Total of 2 set ups)

OSCE Mechanics  Proceed to Holding Areas at 8:30 AM  Section A – Physiology Lecture Room  Section B – Prev Med Lecture Room  Bring only the following:  Ballpens  COMPLETE UNIFORM  Lunch / snacks  No bags, NO CELLPHONES OR OTHER COMMUNICATION DEVICES, INCLUDING 3G/WIFI ENABLED DEVICES (LAPTOPS, TABLETS, etc)  Review materials are allowed

OSCE Mechanics  Holding Areas will be sealed off by 8:30AM, after which last minute orientation/instructions will be given. LATE STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE OSCE.  Morning Examination will proceed from 8:30 AM to 12 noon, in your assigned areas.

OSCE Mechanics  Each group that will finish the morning session will be held in holding areas  Holding Areas:  LA – for those coming from 6 th floor  Microlab – for those coming from 2 nd floor  Students will have their lunch in the holding areas.

OSCE Mechanics  After lunch (around 12:45pm), the students in the holding areas will proceed to their assigned areas for the afternoon sessions  Afternoon Examinations will proceed from 1:00 PM to 4:00PM, in assigned areas.

OSCE Mechanics  Each student that will finish the afternoon session may go home  Loitering within the JMC building will not be allowed

Ground Rules  Late Students will NOT be allowed to take the OSCE.  Students with incomplete uniforms will NOT be allowed to take the OSCE.  Those unable to take the OSCE (incomplete uniform, late or absent) will have to pay P per STATION missed.  Bring only lunch/snacks and ballpens with you.  CELLPHONES or communications devices are not allowed, during the sessions and during THE LUNCH BREAK. Those who will be caught with cellphones or communications devices will be not be allowed to take the OSCE.  DO NOT ACCESS YOUR LOCKERS DURING THE SESSIONS OR LUNCH BREAK.
