What is Community Based Instruction (CBI)? CBI is sustained and repeated instruction CBI is designed for students that need intensive instruction in functional and daily living skills. Community is defined as the school, home and city community environments in the location the student lives. Community= students progress at a greater rate. GOAL= provide a variety of hands on learning opportunities to acquire the skills to live in the world today.

Why teach in the community? The community is where students are expected to be able to function. The community serves as authentic experiences that cannot be adequately replicated or simulated in school or home. Students behavior, motivation, and learning improve during CBI.

CBI Targets

Benefits of Learning in the Community  Promotes inclusion or integration in real environments with peers and community members  Provides a variety of experiences  Enhances life experience  Provides access to age--appropriate environments and materials  Provides the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)  Identifies individual strengths, preferences and interests  Provides opportunities for social and interpersonal communication

CBI is not a field trip CBI is a sustained and repeated instruction whereas Field trip is a one time event
