Community Unit Natalie K. Stanley

Community Unit Designed to be presented to students at McIver Education Center, Greensboro, NC Students grades K-12 with significant cognitive disabilities Students are often not able to participate in field trips and may have behavioral issues which prevent them from visiting many community places with their caregivers. By giving them knowledge of their community, I hope to increase the student awareness of their surroundings and provide incentive to improve behaviors and use appropriate skills in order to more actively participate with the people and services of their community.

Formative Assessments Assessments of understanding will continue throughout the unit. Students will be able to lead their class (with adult supervision) to indicated rooms within the school building. Given a selection of two-four picture cards, students will be able to select the person or persons that work in indicated rooms.

Formative Assessments Given pictures of location sites within the school neighborhood, students will be able to sort the sites into categories: restaurant, service, house, recreation, etc. Students will choose from 2-3 picture selections.

Unit Summary Students will be able to define and identify a community. Through mapping, interviews, research, and virtual tours, students will learn about locations within their school and then expand into the neighborhood immediately surrounding the school location. Students will ultimately be able to describe their connection to their community and how they would receive services at these locations.
