Patient and public involvement in clinical audit Kim Rezel PPI lead, HQIP

Outline PPI at HQIP Lay-friendly reporting How to achieve effective PPI Case studies PPI in national audits

PPI at HQIP The Service User Network, established soon after HQIP in They meet four times a year and are an important advisory groupService User Network There are about 40 members who are patients, service users or carers and are dedicated to being involved in helping improve healthcare at a national and local level

PPI strategy This strategy describes HQIP’s vision, commitment and approach to involving, engaging and informing patients and their representative organisations throughout our work. It has been developed to support the attainment of HQIP’s values and strategic objectives. Delivery of the strategy will be facilitated through our patient and public involvement (PPI) policy and operational plans.

What do we mean by INVOLVEMENT How patients and the public will be involved in the structures and process of the work i.e. through mechanisms such as governance, priority setting, teaching and education, identification of the need for innovation, assessment of technologies. ENGAGEMENT How patients and their carers will be supported to be active participants in their own care through approaches such as personalised care planning and shared decision-making. EXPERIENCE How the subjective experience of patients is captured and utilised for quality improvement Oxford Academic Health Science Network

The National Review into Patient Safety in England “The goal is not for patients and carers to be the passive recipients of increased engagement, but rather to achieve a pervasive culture that welcomes authentic patient partnership – in their own care and in the processes of designing and delivering care. This should include participation in decision- making, goal-setting, care design, quality improvement, and the measuring and monitoring of patient safety.” August 2013
