1 Impact analysis on SUN involvement at HQIP
Margaret Hughes SUN member

2 What will we cover Summary of areas of involvement Recorded impact
Areas of improvement

3 PPI strategy SUN were involved in writing the HQIP PPI strategy The strategy describes HQIP’s vision, commitment and approach to involving, engaging and informing patients and their representative organisations throughout your work. It has been developed to support the attainment of HQIP’s values and strategic objectives.

4 Summary Resource development Project involvement Events
New PPI resources Project involvement IAG members CQC project membership PPI in commissioning project Events HQIP conference Joint presentations NHS England Expo

5 “I’m very proud service user involvement is truly embedded in all HQIP’s work. In communications this has been strategic (website development for instance), but tactical support has been just as valuable – examples including Adrian Hardy, who provided a more than adequate stand in for Sir Bruce Keogh at our 2014 Conference, and Margaret Hughes, who, when staff illness left us short-handed at NHS Expo 2016, supported on the stand and as always proved both highly knowledgeable, charming and a great ambassador for HQIP.” James Thornton Communications manager, HQIP

6 IMPACT ON RESOURCES “I couldn’t put resources like this together without being able to work with the loyal and supportive SUN members, who not only give me their patient perspective but serve as valuable reminder that our work at HQIP overall is to achieve better outcomes for patients” Kim Rezel PPI Lead, HQIP

7 Wider Impact Wrightington Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust Hospitals.
“Without the involvement of a SUN member we would never have had our invaluable team of lay auditors. They have made a huge impact carrying out the more mundane tasks as well as clinical audit thereby freeing up staff and improving the quality of the work that we do across the Trust.” Liz Farnworth, Clinical Audit Manager, WWL

8 IMPACT ON PROJECTS The success of the website redesign involvement is demonstrated by the number of hits it receives. The commissioning Process involvement has resulted in PPI now being an inherent part of all tender documents and 10% of the tender score being awarded in line with the PPI Proposal Having patients involved not only strengthens the message but gives more credibility to the work of HQIP in quality Improvement . “Patient and public involvement has never been more important.  The relationship and approach HQIP takes with its Service User Network members is excellent example of best practice, and one which the NJR endeavours to replicate with its own Patient Network.” James Ludley, Senior Communications Officer (National Joint Registry) Ensures there is a focus on the need of the patient and the public rather than a concentration on the needs of the professionals providing the service Has enabled the inclusion of PPI in areas of activity, e.g. contracting, where it had not previously been contemplated – and shown that it was possible to meet the needs of both PPI and underlying service. Has shown, again, that the real-life experience of SUN members can have a great value in ensuring that work commissioned by or undertaken by HQIP has outcomes that are relevant to the needs of patients.

9 NCAPOP “Interaction with HQIP’s Service User Network (SUN) has helped to shape how service users engage with and contribute to the NCAPOP programme along the commissioning pathway” Nicholas Holmes, Contracts and Procurement Manager, HQIP

10 IMPACT ON EVENTS Supporting HQIP staff at events
Being available to give real life examples of how PPI can be conducted Positive user outcomes within the financial constraints of the NHS.

11 HQIP resources Very informative, helped me to understand quality improvement This was useful for me to see because I can now suggest that any volunteers I work with in Clinical Effectiveness use this tool Excellent course easy to understand and intuitive – well done, I like the pictures, diagrams and examples

12 Thank you “The goal is not for patients and carers to be the passive recipients of increased engagement, but rather to achieve a pervasive culture that welcomes authentic patient partnership – in their own care and in the processes of designing and delivering care. This should include participation in decision-making, goal-setting, care design, quality improvement, and the measuring and monitoring of patient safety.” The National Review into Patient Safety in England – August 2013
