Friends of Music OBJECTIVE FROM BYLAWS To stimulate student, parent, and community interest and participation in the Centennial High School music programs; promote fundraisers for the continued operation of the music programs; and aid the music directors and school administration whenever possible for the harmonious operation of the music programs.

Bylaw Revisions Existing and revised bylaws have been posted on for review.

Bylaw Revisions The current bylaws were ratified in May 2012 to merge the band, choral, and orchestra programs together under one 501(c)3 non-profit organization known as the “CHS Friend of Music.” Previously, the organization known as “CHS Band Backers” served only the band program.

Bylaw Revisions A bylaw committee was created in May 2015 to review and revise the bylaws to reflect the changing needs of the program and community.

Bylaw Revisions GOAL To promote participation in the organization. ACTION Reduced and redefined roles on executive board, requiring fewer persons to be present at monthly board meetings. Members outside the executive board attend meetings on an “as needed” basis.

Bylaw Revisions GOAL To streamline the decision-making process. ACTION Reduced and redefined roles on executive board, thus reducing quorum. Last year, there were several meetings where decisions could not be made because quorum was not met.

Bylaw Revisions The goal was not to eliminate positions, but to provide volunteer opportunities with more flexibility. If you are willing to help, we still need you!

CHS FOM Board of Directors MORALE Corresponding Secretary sends s to community. It is not necessary for them to be on the Board of Directors and attend monthly meetings. The position can be held by someone outside of the Board of Directors.

CHS FOM Board of Directors CURRENT Three Student Members are on Board of Directors and are part of quorum. PROPOSED Students can attend meetings, but do not serve as voting members of the Board. Student members are not part of quorum.

CHS FOM Board of Directors MORALE If students are unable to attend and quorum is not met, decisions cannot be made at a board meeting. If students want to participate in the organization, there are always opportunities!

CHS FOM New Position COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR Serves essentially the same purpose as Corresponding Secretary. Can serve as Secretary if the Secretary is absent or unable.

CHS FOM General Policies More flexibility in scheduling General Meetings (i.e. January/February instead of January). Time lines for certain actions are more consistent Quorum is five (5) at a Board Meeting and (10) at a General Meeting

Welcome to the CHS Music Department Approximately 400 students strong. More that 25% of Centennial students are in a performance ensemble. Our ensembles are some of the top high school ensembles in the state. We are growing EVERY year!

All for one, and one for all! The directors are a team! There are opportunities for students to perform with ensembles in other disciplines (full orchestra, combine choir with full orchestra, band/orchestra soloists with choir, vocalists with jazz band, musical pit orchestra…the list is endless!) Activities and events are designed to create a community of musicians!

Friends of Music They provide almost $30,000 a year to the music program. The county gives us under $6,000 a year. Without your support, we could not survive. Music is expensive for one child. Imagine if you had 400 children!

Sample expenses… Acoustic Shell for stage: $23,000 One season of non-competitive marching band: $10,000 One quality student model tuba: $5000 One quality student model horn: $3500 School quality marimba: $7000 Piano for stage: $8000 One quality student model cello: $2000 Choir music through December: $1500 The list goes on…

Why? Vendor prices keep going up and we have more students we are trying to provide for. Back in the day, music “fees” existed. Now they are not allowed, nor do we think they should be! The music staff at HCPSS Central Office has been very supportive, but the fact of the matter is that county funds are limited.

What’s the bottom line? We need your help! Participate in fundraisers, events, and activities. Crescendo Club Volunteer to help out. If everyone helped just 1 hour a year, we’d be in great shape! If every student raised $10 in a fundraiser, that would be almost $4000 dollars for the music department. No amount of time or money is too small!

Student Accounts In addition to raising money for the program, students raise credits to their “student account.” Students account funds can be used to defer music departments costs. Funds stay with music department and are not available for withdrawal. When students graduate, remaining funds are donated to the program. Funds roll-over year to year

Business Sponsorship Program If you own or know a business-owner that is interested in sponsoring our music program, perks include concert program advertisements, concert slideshow advertisements, airtime at football games, and more! Spring Trip: April 7-10 Everyone is invited, but participation is optional! A great experience for students. Many of our students make friends, learn life skills, and enjoy music making with peers. Trip is typically between 2/3 nights and 3/4 days. Smaller trips are between $500 and $600, larger between $700 and $800 Consider fundraising to lower the cost. Save up for a future year!

Tri-M Music Honor Society Meetings are once a quarter. Attendance is mandatory. Students volunteer throughout the community. 4 credits per semester, 1 of which must be a performance credit Application information is on the Tri-M website, accessible through GPA and enrollment in a music course required. Pink cords are worn at graduation.

Concert Attendance (for your child and you!) Please come see the amazing work your child has done in class! $5 individual/$10 family suggested donation Come to our adjudications in March! Nothing is more motivating and calming than seeing familiar faces in the crowd!
