Chemistry: Notes & Questions Pass in Homework Take out paper or notebook and writing utensil Set up Cornell Notes – Today’s date is: 9/21/10 – Today’s Topic is: Chemistry – Atomic Structure

Draw the Atom

Chemistry Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances. There are two major parts of an atom, the nucleus and the space surrounding the nucleus. The nucleus is made up of positively charged protons and neutrons with no charge. Electrons are negatively charged.

Chemistry What makes an element that particular element is that no other element has the same number of protons in the nucleus. If you know the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, you know what the element is. Electrons occupy the space surrounding the nucleus. They move around the nucleus in areas like the rings of an onion. In a neutral atom, the number of positive protons equals the number of negative electrons.

Chemistry The number of protons in the nucleus is called the atomic number. The total number of particles in the nucleus, protons plus neutrons, is called the mass number or atomic mass.

Chemistry: Questions Draw and fill in the following Table based on your notes: Sub- atomic Particle ChargeLocation in Atom Relative Size Proton Neutron Electron
