 Communication to the Council and European Parliament  Proposing a renewed strategy: e-Science and e-Infrastructures to be priorities in Europe  Actively participating and influencing global partnerships in science  e-Science: what can Science do for us?  Societal, global challenges  Science is changing ICT and ICT is changing Science;  e-Infrastructures: what can we do for Science?  Connectivity, Processing, Information, Collaboration  Mobilization of the research communities Outline

 Highlighting the importance to embrace the e-Science paradigm shift  Highlighting the strategic role of e-Infrastructures as a crucial asset underpinning European research and innovation policies  Calling on Member States and the scientific communities, in cooperation with the European Commission for a reinforced and coordinated effort to further develop world class e- Infrastructures, which will enable the 21st century scientific discoveries ICT infrastructures for e-Science: a recent Communication to European Institutions

 Striving for world leadership in e-Science, establishing e- Infrastructures as a sustainable utility and exploiting them to promote innovation are the three vectors of a renewed European strategy to support the ground-breaking science of 2020 and beyond.  This strategy calls for a major step forward in terms of the type and intensity of investment, better linking of research and innovation policies and coordination of national and Community strategies. A renewed strategy

 Global scientific challenges with high societal impact  Big distances, big files, big processing  Cross-disciplinarity, spread of skills and competences Science and IC Technologies e-Infrastructures changing Science, Scientists changing e-infrastructures

The ‘map of science’ Journal Nature: This map was constructed by sorting roughly 800,000 published papers into 776 different scientific paradigms (shown as pale circular nodes) based on how often the papers were cited together by authors of other papers. […]

To facilitate a rapid transition to e-Science, the European Commission and Member States have made significant investments in e-Infrastructures… What can we do for Science… Linking the ideas at the speed of the light: GÉANT Accessing knowledge: scientific data Innovating the scientific process: global virtual research communities High Performance Computing: PRACE Sharing the best resources: e-Science grid

Data changing Science… large collaborations, virtualisation and data!  Sophisticated tools and instruments for experimentation  ‘even microscopes are becoming high-throughput machines’  Availability of experimental data from many sources and across disciplines  High performance computing allowing fast data processing for simulation

Scientific Information continuums: –between research and education (public mission) –between past, present and future (preservation) –between different scientific disciplines (multidisciplinary) –between different institutions (organisation) –between raw experimental data and publications (e-Science workspaces) con·tin·u·ums: opportunities for organisational changes!  Accessibility to research data is important for the:  good management of the public investment  creation of strong value chains of innovation  enhancement of value from international co- operation Data policy aspects:

Requirements for Scientific Data The ‘policy advisory groups’ e-IRG and ESFRI are working on issues of Scientific Data e-Infrastructures They have identified requirements are now being debated concerning aspects of availability permanency quality rights of use interoperability

Information Management of Repositories Management of Access Processing, Computation Physical infrastructure Repository services Adapted from e-SciDR study Orchestration within the European e-Science e-Infrastructure: need for coordination all the elements and layers  In the Communication to the Council and EP, the Commission asks the involvement of EU Member States and key stakeholders to build robust, dynamic and innovative e- Infrastructures for scientific data  This cooperation stared already by launching 15 projects (40 Mio Euro) and the Open Access Pilot  There is however a long way to go...

Looking ahead  The emergence of "big data science" is there to stay and has a global dimension  It reflects the increasing value of observational and experimental data in virtually all fields of science  Europe is paying particular attention to the aspects of accessibility to scientific information, its quality assurance and preservation  It should contribute to develop an ecosystem of European Digital Repositories, federating and adding value to national and discipline-based repositories We need to exploit the growing sensor/effector layer to make the world itself a real-time database. (from the creativity machine, V. Vinge)

19 Last thoughts…  Developing world-class e-Infrastructures is necessary for Europe to become a hub of excellence in e-Science  Multi-disciplinary approaches, new participative paradigms and global research communities are an essential part of the strategy… but organisational, governance and financing models need reconsideration, informed by sociological and cultural considerations  Upcoming 7 th Call of Research Infrastructures programme to provide support to the e-Science transition
