20. The Mohs hardness scale is used in scratch tests to compare the hardness of materials. For example, according to the scale, diamond is the hardest mineral, which means a diamond can scratch and make a groove on every other mineral. A mineral can only be scratched by a harder material, so if an unknown material can scratch topaz, we know that the unknown material is harder than topaz. If your fingernail can scratch and make a groove on a material, that material must be no harder than – 2.5 (Gypsum)
