1 DEATH: widdow WEDDING: best man BIRTH: christening Try to make a list of as many words and phrases as possible associated with:

2 Watch the extract and try to guess what problem Charles is facing and how he will solve it.

3 You will watch Charles’s speech as first man at the wedding. Can you predict what his wedding will look like?

4 Now you will see four scenes in which Charles meets an American girl called Carrie. After watching these extracts, could you try to describe their next meeting?

5 Before you watch the next extract, could you try to think of some sentences used during the wedding ceremony in the church?

6 Watch the ceremony of the second wedding compare your predictions with what you saw in the extract in pairs. and then

7 Could you make up a possible dialogue between them and act it out in pairs. Now Charles and Carrie will meet again.

8 Now watch the extract and check in pairs how accurate your predictions were. Share the information with some other students.

9 The story continues with the wedding between Carrie and her fiancé Hamish. During this wedding Gareth unexpectedly dies and the whole group of friends now gathers for his funeral.

10 Now you will watch the funeral and hear the poem FUNERAL BLUES by the English poet W. H. Auden. After the scene try to: explain the overall message of the poem try to remember some words or phrases

11 Now your task is to decide how you would work out the final part of the film if you were one of the authors. Discuss this in groups of three.

12 You will watch the final scenes of the film and after this compare them with your predictions. What are the similarities and what are the differences?

13 There are many web-sites on the Internet about this film. Try to find some appraisals about it and compare them with your viewpoints. Write an essay about this and discuss the opinions in pairs next time.
