2 Paragraph #1 MEANING 1.What is this text trying to say about life? Here you want to explore the meaning of the text. Try to go beyond a surface summary of the facts. Ask yourself if there is a broad overarching message or experience the author is trying to convey. Be sure to refer to the text (include 2 quotations) and explain how the text expresses a given meaning.

3 Paragraph #2 CONNECTION 2. What connections can you make between this text and another you have read? Connect to another text provided and personal experiences you’ve been through. Ask yourself in what ways these texts may be similar. However, here again you want to go beyond surface similarities and try to think about deeper similarities in meaning. Make sure you refer to both texts and go into detail about shows, books, etc. you’ve encountered.

4 Paragraph #3 FORM 3.What things did the author do to make this an effective text? Here you want to consider the form of the text. Is it an essay, a story, a news article, a speech? If a story, can you identify elements of the plot triangle? Further, does the author use any particular literary devices? (identify 2 literary devices) Consider anything you think the author is doing that adds or takes away from the success of the text.

5 Paragraph #4 OPINION 4.What is your opinion of the text? As long as you explain yourself (JUSTIFY!), this one’s self-explanatory. Comment on the overall text, the author’s use of literary devices, the message being conveyed, etc…
