The Official Pre-AP ® Program 2 Goals Participants will leave with key instructional strategies to support teachers in the implementation of Common Core across subject areas Participants will leave with a process and tools to immediately establish a common definition of rigor with observable look-fors for their school

The Official Pre-AP ® Program 3 Common Core Instructional Shifts Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction & informational texts Reading & Writing grounded in evidence from text Regular practice with complex text & its academic vocabulary FOCUS QUESTION: How can we make the rigor of the CCSS accessible for all students?

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Segment 1: Close Reading with a Pre-AP Strategy

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Close Reading Activity: 1.Individually read and highlight especially difficult or meaningful words 2.Discuss your findings in your groups (compare/contrast) 3.Fill out the assigned section of your SOAPSTone graphic organizer, including textual support for your responses 4.Share out with the group Strategies: Close Reading Marking the Text Group/Class Discussion SOAPSTone Slide 5

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Segment 2: Co-Constructing a Thematic Statement

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Co-Constructing Activity: 1.Individually, identify a subject and an opinion (i.e., what the author is saying about the subject) 2.Using a model from the instructor, construct your own theme statement 3.Share and Respond with your partners/groups and identify a group theme statement to share with the class 4.Return to your SOAPSTone graphic organizers to identify textual evidence you could use to support the statement 5.Share out with the group Strategies: Guided Writing Sharing and Responding Slide 7

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Segment 3: Socratic Seminar

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Socratic Seminar Activity: 1.Review the Rules 2.Create an inner/outer circle (fishbowl) Inner Circle: Discussion members (Respond to questions using textual support to uncover the ideas, issues, and values of a complex text) Outer Circle: Recorders (What do you hear? What ideas do you agree or disagree with? How did your discussion partner participate?) 3.Participate in the Socratic Seminar 4.Discuss observations 5.Review variations Strategies: Socratic Seminar Note – Taking Levels of Questioning (optional) Slide 9

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Indicators of Rigorous Instruction

The Official Pre-AP ® Program SpringBoard’s Working Definition of Rigor Rigorous instruction operates within, but at the outer edge of, students’ ability to master the content as evidenced by the standards. Rigorous instruction includes the following: Content that focuses on depth over breadth Strategies that scaffold students through varying cognitive levels Assessments designed to measure students’ ability to synthesize learning and adapt that knowledge to different contexts Slide 11

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Reflection: ► What elements of your “experience” are reflected in your assigned domain of the definition of rigor? To CCSS? ► What questions or instructions could you share with a teacher to help facilitate rigorous instruction in writing? Slide 12

The Official Pre-AP ® Program Foundational Strategies Activity: 1.Review the handout Foundational Strategies for Maximizing Success with CCSS 2.Think Pair Share a response to the following: What will you take back with you and apply to help lead rigorous instruction on your campus? How will these strategies help with the shifts associated with CCSS? Strategies: Think-Pair-Share Slide 13
