Summary of The Hunger Games The book starts out with Katniss waking up in her home which is located in District 12. She looks around the room at her mom and her sister Prim, who are nestled close together on the floor. She gets her fathers hunting jacket on and goes out to the woods to hunt. When she gets to her usual spot and finds her Bow and Arrows, she sees that her best friend Gale is waiting for her.

They both realize it is the day of the Reaping, in which two Tributes, one boy and one girl, are chosen from each of the twelve districts to take part in the Hunger Games. When the time comes, Gale and Katniss make their way to the town square where all of the girls and boys (12 to 17) stay to see if their names are drawn. The last thing Katniss wants to happen is for Prims name to be drawn, but when the name for the girl is called, it is. But luckily for Katniss, she can volunteer to take place, and obviously she does.

Katniss is taken by train with her fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark, to the capitol in which they are pampered up to take the pre-game interviews. The tributes get a full week in the capitol before they are actually put into the games, but when the day comes, and she is raised into the arena, and she isn't ready.

The Hunger Games summary Cont’d Katniss immediately takes off into the forest, unarmed, and without food. She spends many night like this, but eventually finds a Bow and Arrows and some food. She also meets up with Peeta, and we find out that Peeta is in love with her. Eventually Katniss and Peeta have to go and find the other tributes from district 1 and 2 and have to kill them before the other tributes kill Peeta and her, so when they track down and kill them they won the games, and get to go home, but not for long, because they both need to make the victory tour to all of the districts.

Summary for Catching Fire Katniss and Peeta start this book out by taking the victory tour to all of the districts. In 11, Katniss is upset by the fact that she lost her best friend from the games and has to face her family. What she decides to do instead of making a speech is to sing Rue’s (her friend from the games) song. When she finishes it, evrybody is in awe, but finally an old man starts whistling the tune at the back of the crowd. But Katniss and Peeta are quickly rushed into the mayor’s house, and when the doors are shut, Katniss hears a loud gunshot. The old man was shot dead.

Catching Fire summary Con’td Katniss and Peeta finish their Victory Tour, (still playing the act of love) and go back home to 12. A couple of months go by, and the 75th Hunger Games is here, and something special always happens for this Quarter Quell. For this one though, only the victors from each district will be drawn from the bowl, and being that there are only two victors from twelve, Katniss and Peeta are going back in.

Catching Fire Summary Con’td Katniss and Peeta go through the same thing before the games, but instead, they have a new strategy, make friends with other people. So they do, and when the games come and they are all raised into the arena, they all meet up with each other. They have some hard night in which they don’t have water, but eventually find a water cleansing kit and a river. But what Katniss doesn’t know is that her “friends” are really planning to break her out of the arena and take her to the rebels camp site, and that is how the book ends.

Career Suzanne Collins worked on a lot of Childrens shows. Some of them are emmy nominated “Clarissa Explains it All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo “, which are located on Nickelodeon. Some other little little kids shows are “Emmy-nominated Little Bear and Oswald”, also aired on Nickelodeon, but in the mornings. (http://www.suzannecollinsbooks.com/bio.htm)

Inspiration “While working on a Kids WB show called Generation O!, she met children's author James Proimos. James talked Suzanne into giving children's books a try” She was inspired by Alice in Wonderland and how urban kids would more likely fall down a manhole instead of a rabbit hole. The Underland Chronicles “Her first books for younger readers were a five-part series called "The Underland Chronicles.” These stories describe the adventures of Gregor, a boy who follows his 2-year-old sister down a hole into a strange world beneath New York City.” (http://www.worldbookonline.com/student/article?id=ar754421&st=suzanne+collins)

Writing styles She uses similes such as “But instead I sit, as motionless as the rock beneath me…” She also uses Personification – “I cant fight the sun. I can only watch helplessly as it drags me into a day I’ve been dreading for months”
