Start of the Managed Test Ensure there are no electrical loads on the battery by closing all the doors and switching off all the vehicle’s lights and accessories Managed Mode. All accessories and lights should be off and doors closed. 7

First, attach the test clips to the clamps (surrounding the battery posts). Next, hold the amps probe in the same orientation it will be when clamped to the battery ground lead but hold it next to the lead so that it can be zeroed before it is attached. Attach test clips to both CLAMPS. Hold amps probe next to GROUND lead. ENTER 8

Testing alternator. Do not stop motor. Vch Ich 13.2 Please wait 4:20 AutoTest now has the test battery connected to the test vehicle’s charging system. Testing battery. Do not stop motor. Vch Ich 13.2 Please wait 4:01 Next, AutoTest checks the battery. The amount of time AutoTest takes to test the battery depends on the state of charge of the battery being tested. AutoTest allows more time for a discharged battery to “come good” during charge than it does for a well charged battery. 30

Disable ignition and fuel and CRANK for up to 15 seconds. 14 sec Disable the ignition by removing the high tension coil lead from the distributor and connecting it to ground. Disable the fuel pump to prevent unburnt fuel damaging the catalytic converter by removing the fuel pump relay or fuse. AutoTest automatically detects the start of cranking and counts down from 15 seconds to show the recommended cranking time remaining. 71

Time Volts Amps 5.0s s s The Starter Test Results Screen The results table shows the cranking volts and amps after 5, 10 and 15 seconds of cranking. When the amps readings are high, either there is excessive engine friction placing high loads on the starter motor or the starter motor is faulty. 72

Time Volts Amps 5.0s s s The Starter Test Results Screen The voltage readings can give an indication of the loaded voltage performance of the battery. If the battery is fully charged and the amps readings are around ½ the battery’s rated CCA then the voltage after 15 seconds is the battery’s Loaded Voltage (LV). LVs below 9.6 volts indicate a reject battery. 73

Time Volts Amps 5.0s s s The Starter Test Results Screen If the test battery was rated at 380 CCA (SAE) and it was fully charged for the test, the results screen above would indicate a reject battery. The test battery is delivering plenty of amps and will start an engine, but it’s voltage isn’t holding up under load, which indicates the battery will soon fail. 74

Time Volts Amps 5.0s s s The Starter Test Results Screen When cranking is stopped before 15 seconds (in this case just after 12 seconds) AutoTest will display as much data as was gathered during the shortened crank. Had cranking stopped before 10 seconds (but after 5) there would only be two rows of results. If cranking stopped before 5 seconds there would only be one. 75
