A bit of history Inhabited for millennia by First Nations (aboriginals), Canada has evolved from a group of French and British colonies into a bilingual, multicultural federation. France sent the first large group of settlers in the 17th century, but ceded its territories in present-day Canada to Great Britain in The present constitution of Canada took effect in 1867, with three British colonies uniting as a single nation of four provinces. Canada gradually attained full independence from Britain during the 20th century, and it presently consists of ten provinces and three territories.

And what about languages? The two official ones are spoken by the majority of Canadians, and the distribution is the following one: English is spoken by a 90% of the population. French is known by a 60% of the population A 0.40% of the population is bilingual. But there are more languages: Chinese is talked by a 2.4% of the population. A 1.62% speaks Spanish. And 1.6% of the population talks in Italian.
