Introduction and Charge to the Review of ESS Target building and Instrument Hall design requirements Roland Garoby November 2014, Lund

ESS is a neutron spallation source made possible by a collaboration of European countries ESS is located in southern Sweden adjacent to MAX-IV (A 4 th generation light source) European Spallation Source (ESS)

ESS – Neutron facilities and bridging the neutron gap ESS long pulse is more powerful and times brighter than existing facilities Compliments existing short pulse neutron scattering facilities

Linac ESS linac will be the most powerful proton linac Average beam power of 5 MW Peak beam power of 125 MW Acceleration to 2 GeV Peak proton beam current of 62.5 mA Pulse length of 2.86 ms at a rate of 14 Hz (4% duty factor) 97% of acceleration provided by superconducting cavities 150 individual high power RF sources 80% of the RF power sources requiring over 1.1 MW of peak RF power ~ 200 M€ on the RF system alone

ESS Linac evolution

Target – monolith Requirements: Convert protons to neutrons Peak brightness (E < 10 meV) at 5 MW: 2x10 14 n/cm 2 /s/sr (30 x ILL) Heat removal Confinement and shielding Unique features: Rotating target He-cooled W target 6 Proton beam window Moderator and reflector plug Target wheel Neutron beam extraction Target drive housing Neutron beam window Steel shielding Monolith liner

Target station 7 ~ 130 m long Accelerator – Target interface Target monolith, incl. Moderator & Reflector Systems, and Target Systems Fluid Systems High bay Remote Handling Systems Hot cells plus casks and tooling to transport components from monolith to cells Safety credited controls to protect workers, pubic, and environment from radioactive hazard

How ESS will ultimately look like…

Scope and Charge to the Review Committee 12 Scope The scope of this review is the requirements established for the conventional facilities (i.e. buildings and utilities) associated with the Target Building and Instrument Halls. Charge The committee is asked to address the following questions: Are the requirements for the facility complete? Are the requirements clearly stated and sufficiently justified? Do the building design concepts adequately meet the requirements? Comment if the building design concepts exceed the scope of the requirements.

Deliverables… 13 Review Deliverables A report in PowerPoint format is expected at the end of the review. The report should address each of the charge items in terms of: Findings – What the project told the review committee Comments – What the review committee thinks of what was presented and suggestions for future efforts. Recommendations – What the committee feels strongly that the project should do.
