Stress is taking a significant toll on our nation’s mental health Why should we care about understanding & promoting wellbeing? Why the sudden interest in wellbeing science? Stress is taking a significant toll on our nation’s mental health 29% of 16-24 year olds reported having a mental health disorder in the past 12 months (NZ Mental Health Survey, 2004) Nearly half of NZ population meets the criteria for a mental disorder at some point in their lives (Oakley Browne et al., 2006) More than half of all adults with mental health problems were diagnosed in childhood (Oakley Browne et al. 2006) Depression set to become 2nd leading cause of disability globally by 2020 (WHO) ERO’s Wellbeing Indicators & Assessment reports Photo credit: Beyond The Teacher’s Desk ©Lucy Hone 2015

V stands for Vitality: Eat, Sleep, Move Eat Real food (not packaged) things your grandmother would recognise! Sleep = vital for recovery 7-8 hours stick to a routine avoid stimulants before bed (caffeine/electronics) Move = burns off stress as much as you can, all activities count ©Lucy Hone 2015
