Introduction Picture in your mind a place in time when imposing castles stood high on the hills, valiant knights in armor protected all the citizens of a kingdom, and noblemen ruled over serfs. You may hear the thunderous galloping of horses hoofs or the clang of swords as knights embark on a noble quest. You may hear the laughter of men and women or the excited squeal of children as they enjoy a variety of activities of a seasonal fair or celebration. Can you smell the roasted turkey leg? Perhaps you smell the fresh bread or other sweet bakery items. You may be tempted to dance to the merry tunes of the lute or flute players. This time in history was known as the Middle Ages or the Medieval era. We invite you to experience this magical time through our web quest. HUZZAH!! We hope you enjoy it! Designed by Robin McConnells Seventh Grade Class 2008 – 2009 Jacobs Fork Middle School, Newton, NC

The Task Your task is to gain a sufficient understanding of the Medieval era. You will research and analyze seven categories of information based on this period of time in history. Think of a mosaic, a picture or decorative design made by setting small colored pieces of paper, tile, glass or rock into a surface. (Dictionary.com). You will gather information, answer questions and graphic organizers, participate with interactive activities, and complete a cooperative group project.Your teacher will assign your groups. Hopefully, you will be able to create a mental mosaic of this of this era. Your group project will be to design a time capsule of ten items from this era. You will write an explanation of each item and tell why you think it should be included.

The Process Each participant will have a hard copy of a journal. In your journal you will answer questions, transfer information to graphic organizers, and complete a variety of activities with information you gather from various web sites. Step 1. Government – What was their set of political, economic and social rules? How was their type of government similar and different to our government? Step 2. Roles – Who were the people of this society? Step 3. Life in the Castle – What were the important aspects of daily life? Step 4. Tournaments – Why were tournaments held? Step 5. Quests of Knights – What is a quest? Why did knights go on quests? Step 6. Technology – What were the types of technology? How did technology impact their lives? Step 7. Entertainment – Explain the types of entertainment. Which would be your favorite? Why? Step 8. Cooperative Project – With your group, you will design a time capsule containing 10 items to represent this era. You will give a written description of each item and why you think it should be included. ( A time capsule is a historic cache of goods and/or information, usually intended as a method of communication with people in the future. Ask.com)

Student Resources PC with Internet access Journal Pencil Group – a round oatmeal container to use as the time capsule Materials to decorate the time capsule ( colored pencils, crayons, markers, glue, scissors, construction paper etc.) Creative items or materials to construct/create/represent the objects for the time capsule

Group Assignments You will be in a team of seven students. Each will consist of the following categories and research the following topic. You will become an expert: on your topic and in turn, teach the information to your group. King – Forms of Government Queen – Life in the Castle Peasant – Roles Serfs – Tournaments Knights – Quests of Knights Craftsman – Technology Jester – Entertainment Each category of people will work together on the topic before they teach their team the topical information. (Jigsaw) For example, all the students who have the role of King will work together on the web sites to gather information about the Forms of Government and then teach their teammates about the topic, help them with the questions and graphic organizers. Please encourage each student to participate with the interactive activities on the various websites.

Evaluations Rubric for Journal – You will be evaluated on the content and completion of your journal and the assignments within. Rubric for Collaboration – You will be evaluated as a group on your participation and completion of your time capsule.

Forms of Government By: Colton, Maggie, Zoe, and Justin

Introduction Take a moment to close your eyes and travel back in time to the 20 th century when knights, kings and queens walked the grounds of the Earth. During the medieval times they had to have some sort of stable government. In the medieval times the government they followed was called monarchy or feudalism. Now sit back, relax and enjoy the middle ages.

Task Your task is to read the following page and use the information to help you. Next, take the word monarchy and put it in a bubble map in your journal. Around it you will list the main ideas or concepts of this type of government. You will also answer questions in your journal.

Life in the Castle By: Sherry, wilburn, blaithe and Spencer

INTRODUCTION Life in the castle was tough for the average person. The houses were not as comfortable as we would have it. The streets were full of pig sties. It is said that the King of France would faint from the stench whenever he would peer down out of the window. Through this you will learn about the rooms and residents of the castle. Also a few questions may arise through this web quest like: How did people use the restroom? What did people do if they were sick? What was the philosophy of the average person? Continue to Next Slide

The Process In this web quest, you will be able to visit a few internet sites and gather information. After that you will be given a series of questions to answer with the information you have gathered. When you have achieved this you will be able to fill in a graphic organizer. After you finish that you will be sent to an online activity to go further into the castle walls. continue to next slide

Ready Set Joust

Introduction What did people do before they had television and computers? THEY HELD TOURNAMENTS!!

Task You will learn about knights and the tournaments that they held. You will understand why they held tournaments, and what they did during the tournaments.

information Tournaments were when knights would fight each other or capture one another for a ransom. The rules set out for tournaments were very specific; such as: you were not allowed to capture another knight without warning them. After King Henry IIs favorite knight was killed, he did not allow jousting. Every suit of armor was made to fit each individual knight. An average family was able to live off of ten Euros and a suit of armor cost about three-hundred Euros.

Source links Use the following websites to complete the questions in your journal Now go to the following website and play the jousting game.

conclusion You have learned about jousting during the middle ages. The students have completed a graphic organizer with details about jousting. The students have also played a jousting game to give a visual aid to their learning

Lets go back to medieval times. The time of kings, queens, and knights. In this presentation we will be talking about the Quest of Knights.

Your task is to research and answer questions involving medieval times. Our group has provided some information in the PowerPoint. You also will be answering questions to go along with the information.

Information Before a knight could become a knight they had to pass long, hard and sometimes boring hours of practice. The knight was one of 3 types of men fighting during medieval times. Knights were generally the wealthiest. When knights captured a city they were allowed to ransack it. Stealing goods and valuables. Certain knights had their own seat at the Round Table. Only the bravest most noblest knights had a seat at the Round Table. Whoever did have a seat had their name carved into it. After all the knights were chosen for seats there was 1 left. This seat was reserved for the knight that found the Holy Grail. First (before becoming a knight) they had to be a page. If they did good as a page they became a squire. If squires were worthy they were dubbed and became a knight.

Entertainment Created By Allie, Monica, Kelsie, and Dustin

Introduction A long time ago there were kings and queens and knights and jokers, but you probably are thinking what did they do so long ago that kept them from being bored. Well they did lots of things to keep them from being bored and in this web quest you will find out what those things are.

During this part of the web quest you will be learning about all of the different types of entertainment that were in the medieval times. After you learn everything provided, you will use the information to fill in a bubble map. The directions will be attached to it. When you successfully complete that, then you will find a game called hang the joker. Its similar exactly like hangman, but with words from the medieval times. Then you will draw yourselves as a jester and create 5 jokes that you would tell the king. But before you get to the fun stuff, you have to do what we told you at the beginning. p.s. when you go through the slides click the little

Music from the middle ages ( also called medieval music ) represents almost 1,000 years of European musical improvement and it is the ancestor to all later western music. The popularity of Medieval music lasted from about A.D 500 to about Since most of the music has been lost, we know very little about it. From the things people have written about the music during that period of time tell about many other forms of music. Church music is the only known music left composed before the year Many people of the Middle Ages sang chant, or plain strong. A chant is a single line of melody sung to Latin texts without harmony. In the middle ages many types of chant were used all throughout Europe. Listen to the songs above to answer the questions. Then go to the following sites and listen to the music. (scroll down and click the ) Bards, Music, and Arthurian Legend

Jesters and fools! During the medieval time kings and queens would use jesters as a source of entertainment. People would dress in may different colors and make fools of them self's, hence the name. They would also play a high pitch flute to make the people laugh as they dace around. Some people don't know that jokers and fools would also be a beerier of illness.

Feasts were considered a very important time for entertainment. People during the middle ages would have huge feasts in honor of another king coming to their castle. They would try to impress other kings to make their castle look the most elegant. They would have a lot of other types of entertainment like fools, circuses, music, and games. The better the feast the more the other kings would like to come. For six thousand or so guests there were four hundred swans, three hundred quarters of wheat, one hundred peacocks, thirteen thousand dishes of jelly, cold baked tarts, custards, and spices, sugared delicacies and wafers and much more foods were readied. Now read a little more:

The game of Chess! The game known as chess was founded in the medieval time. The game has evolved over the years. It is a game now played world wide. Have you played chess, if you have not the link below might help you understand it better. Pieces of Chess
