NIH Office of Technology Transfer Synapse SM 5

NIH Office of Technology Transfer Synapse SM has made it possible for OTT to reach a wider business market by matching its portfolio to the research interests of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. OTT is able to proactively market and provide individualized and targeted information to companies that were unaware of the scientific possibilities available to them at NIH and FDA. Synapse SM can also be used to address other research and development challenges, including patent prosecution and enforcement, searching for experts, and portfolio management. Synapse SM Benefits 6

NIH Office of Technology Transfer Synapse SM draws from several databases:  TechTracS ®, the internal database containing NIH and FDA intramural research portfolios  U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) patent applications and issued patents  CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects), the database of millions of records of HHS/NIH funded biomedical research projects conducted at universities, hospitals, and other research institutions.  RaDiUS ® (Research and Development in the United States), a database maintained by the RAND Corp. that includes all research grants and contracts awarded by federal agencies  Medline ®, a database containing abstracts or full text of 16 million articles published in nearly 5000 journals  Millions of records of biomedical news stories. Data Sources The data are transformed and stored to allow for seamless—and rapid—cross-linking between databases. 7

NIH Office of Technology Transfer Analyze ~7,000 NIH IP for licensing Help find licensing partners Search IP for VCs and Angel Investors Search USPTO for NIH-complimentary IP Extramural grantees  intramural IP Synapse SM – Current Uses 8
