What is Required? Sensor-related vocabularies –Sensor types –Observed properties Sensor-related ontologies? –Classes of Sensors –Sub-types, relationships, …

What is Required? Sensor-related standards –Content standards (model, encoding) –Services –Transports

Example: Marine Metadata Interoperability

Sensor Web Related Tasks CL (Key Climate Data from Satellite Systems) CL (Seamless Weather and Climate Prediction System) DA (Sensor Web Enablement for In-Situ Observing Network Facilitation) DA (Higher Level Data Product Tools) DI (Tsunami Early Warning System of Systems)

Sensor Web Related Tasks DI (Implementation of a Wildland Fire Warning System at Global Level) WE (Space-based Global Observing System for Weather) CEOS WGISS Committee on Earth Observation Satellites, Working Group on Information Systems and Services)

GEOSS Sensor Web Workshop Organized by task DA May 15-16, Secretariat, Geneva, Switzerland No fees, but registration required Invitation and agenda online:

Discussion I the vast majority of sensor data is unstructured, poorly described, difficult to be accessed. BUT: no metadata/structure will be provided for this data how to consume and use sensors that have no standardized way of access/transport/etc. (unstructured world)? current GEOSS Architecture focuses on structured data, well defined service interfaces etc. and blocks out most sensor data

Discussion II sensor data is often produced on the fly, other GEOSS data is mostly archived educate sensor developers/providers encourage users to use standards for data data transport/encoding/description make a start and show how it works: Provide some basic IOC, including things like unique identifier, URN-resolver, dictionaries, vocabularies etc..Step away from simple end-to-end showcases. IOC has to support aspects like traceability

Discussion III talk to sensor manufactures (?) – better convince various communities that then talk to manufactures (chicken/egg problem) coordinate with other tasks, in particular DA07-04 (Sensor Web for in-situ sensors)
