Chapter 6

 Many people feel anxiety when starting a new job  Employers generally understand  What are some of the worries? ◦ Getting there on time ◦ Not messing up on the first day ◦ Getting along with other co-workers ◦ Understanding the rules/policies ◦ Going through training

 Your first day depends on the company  You might be put right into the position  You may have to go through a training period  Some companies have very formal employee orientation programs  You may go through training with other new hires

 The Organizational Structure of the business shows how the workplace is laid out  This is very important to know  Not all structures are the same  It tells you who is in authority  When you begin work you will be given a job title – where do you fit in on the organizational chart?

Executive Principal House I Principal House II Principal House III Principal Teachers Art, Business, Health, Music, PE, Social Studies Teachers English, ESL, FACS, Science, Technology Teachers Foreign Lang, Library, Math, Psychology, Speech, Special Education

 All companies have policies and rules  New employees are issued a policy manual  They include: ◦ Salary and benefits ◦ Attendance, absences and punctuality policies ◦ Time off without pay (Leave) ◦ Work schedule and records ◦ Expenses and reimbursement ◦ Due process ◦ Probation and review  Just like your CNS Agenda

 Supervisor is responsible for training you  Use the supervisor for communication  Ask the supervisor for direction  Don’t ask for or expect special treatment  Accept and use the supervisor’s suggestions

 Every worker must pay federal and state income tax  You pay-as-you-go (each pay period)  The amount of tax that is withheld from each paycheck depends on 3 things: 1.The amount of money you earn 2.Whether you are married or not 3.The number of allowances (or tax exemptions) you are entitled to claim
